What is an integration engineer?

Integration Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in connecting different software systems, applications, or technologies to ensure they work together seamlessly. Their responsibilities often include designing integration solutions, troubleshooting issues, and maintaining data flow between systems. They collaborate with development, operations, and business teams to implement and optimize integrations, ensuring that the organization's technology ecosystem runs efficiently. Integration Engineers often work with APIs, middleware, and various programming languages to achieve these goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an integration engineer?

To thrive as an Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, experience with system integration, and proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C#. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Apache Camel), APIs, and relevant certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure seamless connection of systems, effective troubleshooting, and smooth collaboration with cross-functional teams.

What are some common challenges integration engineers face when connecting disparate systems, and how are they typically addressed?

Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as data format incompatibility, varying communication protocols, and legacy system limitations when connecting different software or hardware systems. To address these, they use middleware solutions, develop custom adapters, and leverage standardized APIs or integration platforms to ensure seamless data flow. Regular collaboration with software developers, IT staff, and business stakeholders is essential to understand system requirements and troubleshoot integration issues efficiently.

What is the difference between Integration Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectIntegration EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications like Cisco, AWS may helpBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; coding certifications optional
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with IT, network teams, and clients to implement integrationsWorks primarily on coding, designing, and testing software applications
Industry UsageCommon in tech, healthcare, finance for system integrationsWidespread across all software development sectors
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for technical skills and project scopeCompared for coding skills and software design expertise

The main difference is that Integration Engineers focus on connecting and configuring systems and software to work together seamlessly, often involving network and hardware components. Software Developers primarily design, code, and test software applications. Both roles require technical skills, but Integration Engineers emphasize system integration and interoperability, while Software Developers focus on creating software solutions.

How much do integration engineers make?

Integration engineers in general earn a median salary of around $80,000 to $120,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and the industry. In metropolitan areas, salaries tend to be higher due to cost of living and demand for technical skills such as API development, system integration, and cloud platforms.

Job description

Sr. Platform Integration Engineer

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

We build the automation, infrastructure, and validation systems that bring new computing platforms to life at scale! Our team lives at the intersection of hardware and software, turning tough engineering challenges into reliable, repeatable workflows. When a new platform needs to be provisioned, orchestrated, and qualified, we're the ones who make it happen—and we genuinely enjoy the work.

As our Sr. Platform Integration Engineer, you'll be the driving force behind getting emerging platforms ready for scaled testing and qualification. This is a software-focused role: you'll blend hands-on development, infrastructure engineering, and technical leadership to shape the systems our engineers depend on every day. You'll work with firmware integration points and build a working understanding of incoming hardware capabilities—while our dedicated hardware team owns the physical handling and debug. If you like solving problems that span software, automation, and firmware integration, this is a role where your work directly advances our most important achievements.

Responsibilities
  • Integrate new computing platforms into automation, provisioning, observability, and test orchestration ecosystems through software and firmware integration points
  • Design and maintain full-stack applications, APIs, automation services, and operational tooling
  • Build infrastructure automation, deployment pipelines, and platform provisioning workflows
  • Partner with collaborators on platform requirements and qualification schedules while coordinating technical readiness across engineering fields
  • Troubleshoot complex software, automation, and infrastructure issues, using AI-assisted and agentic coding tools to speed delivery
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline
  • Experience developing and supporting full-stack applications in complex engineering environments
  • Experience building software automation, DevOps, or infrastructure solutions
  • Strong grasp of CI/CD methodologies, distributed systems, and infrastructure automation
  • Experience leading technical initiatives and coordinating work across multiple teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with container orchestration and cloud-native architectures such as OpenShift, Kubernetes, and GCP
  • Proficiency with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and REST APIs alongside Linux administration
  • Familiarity with workflow orchestration and scheduling tools such as Temporal and HashiCorp Nomad
  • Experience with observability platforms such as Grafana, Prometheus, and Loki
  • Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor
