Job description

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking qualified applicants for an Academic Success Coach for the health professions academic programs. The Academic Success Coach will promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by using coaching techniques to empower students in identifying goals, overcoming challenges, and developing strategies that promote academic success. The Success Coach provides a variety of academic support initiatives such as transition and development programs; early intervention strategies; and tutoring and mentoring programs. In addition, the Academic Success Coach will work one-on-one with students to build individualized learning plans, daily schedules, and study strategies. The Success Coach will serve the needs of the graduate and doctoral programs in the Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine, Leighton School of Nursing and College of Community and Health Sciences. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Academic Support Services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Facilitate individual and group academic coaching sessions that support learning, strengthen cognitive and metacognitive skills, and foster academic development for graduate and medical professional students.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of new and continuing student orientation programs.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to university departments , including but not limited to mental and physical health and accommodation services.
  • Assist with outreach and support initiatives for students who may benefit from additional preparation and resources for medical licensing exams.
  • Collaborate regularly with faculty across all academic programs to identify opportunities for academic support and develop learning experiences that foster student growth, engagement, and success.
  • Provide individualized academic coaching for students in areas including learning and study strategies, test-taking approaches, licensing exam preparation, long-term knowledge retention, time and energy management, and other skills that support academic success.
  • Maintain accurate records of individuals and groups utilizing Academic Support Services.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops that foster connection and community among students, enhance knowledge of effective learning and study strategies, and strengthen the academic and professional skills that support student success.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree required in psychology, counseling, education, or related field.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of Marian University.
  • Previous experience in a counseling, education, academic support, or tutoring setting within an institution of higher education desired.
  • Previous experience working with graduate and professional students desired.
  • Excellent verbal, written, collaborative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple projects concurrently, and work under minimal supervision
  • Understanding of Student Affairs/Student Development and effective practices in learning strategy.
  • Adheres to Marian University's policies and procedures
  • Shows courtesy and respect in interactions with fellow employees, students subordinates, and supervisors

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree and/or experience in higher education or medical education setting.
