Insurance Recovery Attorney information

What is an insurance recovery attorney?

An Insurance Recovery Attorney is a legal professional who specializes in helping individuals and businesses obtain insurance coverage and payments they are entitled to under their policies. They assist clients in disputes with insurance companies, such as claim denials, delayed payments, or underpaid claims. These attorneys represent policyholders in negotiations, settlement discussions, and lawsuits to ensure their rights are protected and they receive the benefits promised by their insurance contracts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance recovery attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Recovery Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and strong expertise in insurance law and policy analysis. Familiarity with legal research tools (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), litigation management software, and e-discovery platforms is typically required. Outstanding negotiation, analytical thinking, and client communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure effective representation of clients in coverage disputes, maximize favorable outcomes, and foster trust in complex, high-stakes legal matters.

What are some common challenges faced by insurance recovery attorneys when negotiating with insurance companies?

Insurance Recovery Attorneys often encounter challenges such as complex policy language, delayed responses from insurers, and aggressive defense strategies aimed at minimizing payouts. Navigating these issues requires strong negotiation skills, a deep understanding of insurance law, and the ability to interpret detailed policy provisions. Attorneys in this role frequently collaborate with clients, experts, and sometimes other legal teams to build a compelling case, ensuring that clients receive the coverage they are entitled to under their policies.

What is the difference between Insurance Recovery Attorney vs Insurance Claims Adjuster?

While both roles involve insurance, their responsibilities, credentials, and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Pre-Litigation Attorney — Personal Injury
DM Injury Law · St. Louis, MO · Full-time
[Missouri Bar required]  [No billable hours]  [$115K–$170K total comp]  [Uncapped origination bonus]
$115,000 – $170,000 Total Compensation
Base salary plus quarterly performance bonus. High performers consistently earn above the range. Total comp grows with you — there is no cap.
ORIGINATION BONUS — UNCAPPED, PAID ON EVERY CASE YOU BRING IN
Refer a case to the firm and earn one-third of the firm's fee at resolution — on top of your regular compensation. Most firms reserve this for partners. We offer it to every attorney from day one.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
DM Injury Law is one of the fastest-growing personal injury firms in the Midwest — 70+ attorneys, 200 support staff, and offices across 10 markets including Kansas City, St. Louis, Denver, Omaha, and Oklahoma City. We've secured multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for clients across every market we serve.
This role sits inside our St. Louis office. You'll carry a personal injury pre-litigation caseload — building client relationships, negotiating with insurers, and moving cases toward resolution. Dedicated paralegals, case managers, and intake staff handle the administrative load so your time stays on law.
70+ attorneys firm-wide     200+ support staff     10 markets     $11M top verdict

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Manage a personal injury pre-litigation caseload from intake through demand and resolution
  • Build and maintain client relationships through consistent, proactive communication
  • Negotiate directly with insurance adjusters to maximize client recovery
  • Draft demand letters, settlement agreements, correspondence, and legal documents
  • Collaborate with and direct paralegal and case management staff in the St. Louis office
  • Develop referral relationships that grow your book of business — and your income
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • Active Missouri Bar license — required
  • At least one year of personal injury experience preferred; strong candidates with relevant civil litigation background considered
  • Eligibility to obtain Illinois Bar license (UBE score or reciprocity)
  • Genuine client-first orientation — you understand how a case outcome affects someone's life
  • Organized and self-directed in a high-volume environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable with legal technology and case management platforms
GROWTH & LEADERSHIP
Attorneys who want to lead find the opportunity here. Growth looks different for everyone — we build around what matters to you.
Team lead: Guide and support a group of attorneys day-to-day
Department head: Own strategy and performance across a practice area
Mentorship: Shape the next generation of attorneys at the firm
New markets: Help open and build offices as the firm expands

WHY DM INJURY LAW

Uncapped earning potential: High performers earn above the range. Origination income adds directly on top — no ceiling.
Origination from day one: One-third of the firm's fee on every case you bring in. No partnership track required.
No billable hour requirements: Contingency practice — you focus on client outcomes, not clock entries.
Dedicated support staff: Paralegals, case managers, and intake behind every attorney.
Quarterly bonus: Performance bonuses paid every quarter — not just once at year end.
401(k) with 4% match: Fully matched up to 4% — above the law firm average.
Full benefits from day one: Health, dental, and vision coverage.
Sustainable caseloads: Realistic workloads by design. Long-term career, not a burnout cycle.
