Insurance Recovery Attorney information

What is an insurance recovery attorney?

An Insurance Recovery Attorney is a legal professional who specializes in helping individuals and businesses obtain insurance coverage and payments they are entitled to under their policies. They assist clients in disputes with insurance companies, such as claim denials, delayed payments, or underpaid claims. These attorneys represent policyholders in negotiations, settlement discussions, and lawsuits to ensure their rights are protected and they receive the benefits promised by their insurance contracts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance recovery attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Recovery Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and strong expertise in insurance law and policy analysis. Familiarity with legal research tools (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), litigation management software, and e-discovery platforms is typically required. Outstanding negotiation, analytical thinking, and client communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure effective representation of clients in coverage disputes, maximize favorable outcomes, and foster trust in complex, high-stakes legal matters.

What are some common challenges faced by insurance recovery attorneys when negotiating with insurance companies?

Insurance Recovery Attorneys often encounter challenges such as complex policy language, delayed responses from insurers, and aggressive defense strategies aimed at minimizing payouts. Navigating these issues requires strong negotiation skills, a deep understanding of insurance law, and the ability to interpret detailed policy provisions. Attorneys in this role frequently collaborate with clients, experts, and sometimes other legal teams to build a compelling case, ensuring that clients receive the coverage they are entitled to under their policies.

What is the difference between Insurance Recovery Attorney vs Insurance Claims Adjuster?

Insurance Claims Adjusters handle the evaluation and settlement of claims, often working directly with policyholders and insurers. While both roles involve insurance, their responsibilities, credentials, and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

About the Role

The Claims Recovery Case Specialist/Legal Assistant plays a central role within a recovery pod supporting health plans in subrogation and third-party liability (TPL) recovery efforts. You manage the day-to-day administration of insurance recovery cases—keeping files organized, documentation complete, and case statuses current so attorneys and senior paralegals can focus on negotiation and settlement with carriers and liability insurers.

This is a frontline insurance-operations role focused on responsiveness, communication, and execution. You will serve as a primary point of contact for inbound inquiries, coordinate with insurance carriers and attorneys, and ensure every health plan recovery case is properly documented and progressing toward resolution.

This role is ideal for candidates with experience in insurance claims, payer operations, or healthcare billing who thrive in fast-paced environments and enjoy keeping complex claim portfolios moving forward.

Compensation:

  • On-Target Earnings (OTE): $47,000 – $52,000 annually (includes base salary plus performance-based incentive)

Responsibilities:

  • Manage administrative tasks tied to active health plan subrogation and insurance recovery cases
  • Answer inbound calls and emails regarding TPL claims, liens, coverage questions, and documentation requests
  • Communicate professionally with plaintiff attorneys, insurance adjusters, claim representatives, and carriers
  • Send lien notices and updates, confirm receipt, and follow up on missing or pending materials
  • Prepare, organize, and route documentation for Senior Paralegals and Attorneys handling negotiations
  • Monitor case status and flag coverage, liability, or timing concerns to the Senior Paralegal
  • Maintain complete case notes and communication logs in claims and recovery systems
  • Support pod responsiveness standards and consistent health-plan client experience
  • Partner with Senior Paralegals to identify file gaps and follow-ups prior to settlement
  • Track incoming reimbursement payments and escalate delays appropriately

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree required; Bachelor’s preferred or equivalent industry experience (4+ years)
  • Experience in insurance claims, health plan operations, subrogation, TPL, workers’ compensation, auto liability, or legal administration preferred
  • Familiarity working with carriers, TPAs, and liability insurers
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort handling high-volume claim files
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Professional, service-oriented approach with external stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritize requests in a fast-moving environment
  • Detail-oriented and accurate with documentation
  • Proactive and dependable—anticipates needs and keeps the team informed
  • Prior experience in healthcare reimbursement or payer environments a plus

Who is Intellivo?

As an industry market leader in subrogation, Intellivo empowers health plans and insurers to maximize financial outcomes by identifying and pursuing more reimbursement opportunities from alternative third-party liability (TPL) payers. Through innovative technology, Intellivo accelerates the identification of reimbursement opportunities while completely eliminating the need to fill information gaps through ineffective and burdensome outreach to plan members.
