What does an insurance project manager do?

An Insurance Project Manager oversees and coordinates projects within insurance companies, such as launching new products, implementing technology solutions, or improving business processes. They are responsible for planning, budgeting, scheduling, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within scope. Insurance Project Managers often work with cross-functional teams, manage risks, and communicate progress to stakeholders. Their expertise helps ensure that complex initiatives meet regulatory requirements and business objectives.

What are the typical challenges an insurance project manager faces when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Insurance Project Managers often collaborate with diverse teams, including underwriters, actuaries, IT specialists, and compliance officers. A common challenge is aligning different departments' priorities and ensuring clear communication about project goals, timelines, and regulatory requirements. Job Title: Project Manager – Disaster Restoration

Job Description

This role oversees disaster restoration projects from initial site assessment through estimating, insurance approval, and full project execution within a rapidly growing restoration division in Edmonton. The Project Manager manages a high volume of residential and commercial restoration claims related to flooding, water, fire, hail, and other emergency loss events while working closely with insurance adjusters, carriers, and field technicians. The position blends office-based coordination with on-site presence and hands-on collaboration, requiring someone who can step into a fast-paced environment and deliver results with minimal training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end disaster restoration projects, from initial site assessment through project completion.
  • Conduct detailed site inspections to assess property damage caused by flooding, water, fire, hail, and other emergency loss events.
  • Prepare accurate and detailed insurance restoration estimates and claims using industry-standard software tools.
  • Coordinate and secure insurance approvals by working directly with insurance adjusters and carriers.
  • Oversee multiple active projects and claims simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborate closely with restoration technicians and subcontractors to ensure timely and quality project execution.
  • Monitor project progress, schedules, and budgets, and adjust plans as needed to meet project objectives.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and reporting for all projects, including photos, notes, and claim-related records.
  • Communicate proactively with property owners, clients, and insurance partners to provide updates and manage expectations.
  • Support and, where applicable, lead restoration technicians and subcontractors on active job sites.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices while working on active restoration and construction sites.
  • Participate in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule to respond to emergency loss events as required.
  • Use project management and restoration platforms, including the person, XactAnalysis, and PSA, to manage workflows and documentation.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 3+ years of project management experience within the disaster restoration industry.
  • Proven experience managing disaster and residential restoration projects and insurance claims.
  • Hands-on experience with the person, XactAnalysis, and PSA software platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and manage detailed insurance restoration estimates and claims.
  • Experience assessing property damage related to flooding, water damage, fire damage, hail damage, and other emergency loss events.
  • Experience working directly with insurance adjusters and insurance carriers.
  • Ability to manage multiple active projects and claims simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
  • Strong documentation and reporting abilities with a high level of accuracy and detail.
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Comfort working in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule approximately one week per month.
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to work efficiently under pressure.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and manage a high volume of claims.

Nice to have:

  • IICRC certification.
  • WRT, FSRT, CCT, or RIA certifications.
  • Moisture Control Certification.
  • PMP, CAP, or other formal project management certification.
  • Experience working with insurers.
  • Construction Management diploma or related post-secondary education.
  • Experience leading restoration technicians and subcontractors on job sites.
  • OH&S or COR-related safety training.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in field and project environments.
  • Interest in continuous learning within restoration, construction, and safety best practices.

Work Environment

The position offers a mix of office and field work, including regular travel throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area using a company vehicle. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with participation in a rotational 24/7 on-call schedule approximately once per month to respond to emergency loss events.
