What does a project manager do?

Project managers work in a variety of fields, from software development to marketing to construction. They oversee designs and plans from start to finish. Specific job duties of project managers vary, depending on the company. General responsibilities include reviewing the scope of the project, scheduling and delegating tasks to staff, monitoring expenses to stay on budget, and pushing all teams to meet deadlines. As a project manager, you often need to collaborate with different departments within the organization, so you must communicate with them regularly to execute their duties effectively. You also are required to write and submit detailed reports to company executives about the project status and anticipate potential issues and stumbling blocks that might impact timelines and overall success.

What tasks can a project manager with no prior experience expect to handle during the first few months on the job?

As a Project Manager starting without prior experience, you'll typically focus on supporting more senior managers by coordinating meetings, maintaining project documentation, tracking deadlines, and communicating updates to team members. You may also assist with scheduling, resource allocation, and risk identification while learning established project management methodologies and tools. This hands-on experience helps you build foundational skills and understand project workflows, preparing you for increased responsibility over time.

How can I become a project manager with no experience?

Becoming a project manager with no experience is possible by building relevant skills, such as communication, organization, and problem-solving. You can start by seeking entry-level roles like project coordinator or assistant, volunteering for project work, and taking online courses or certifications like CAPM or Google Project Management. Highlight transferable skills from previous work or academic experiences, and network with professionals in the field to learn about opportunities. Gaining hands-on experience, even on small projects, will strengthen your resume and prepare you for project management roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager with no prior experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager with no prior experience, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of project management principles, often supported by a relevant degree or entry-level certification like CAPM. Familiarity with project management software such as Trello, Asana, or Microsoft Project is highly valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability help you lead teams and manage stakeholder expectations effectively. These skills and qualities enable you to coordinate tasks, meet deadlines, and deliver successful project outcomes even when starting out.

While most project management roles require some experience, entry-level positions or certifications like the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) can help individuals with no prior experience start in the field. Developing skills in organization, communication, and using project management tools can also improve chances of obtaining a project manager role without experience.

Can I be an entry level project manager?

Entry-level project managers typically do not require extensive experience and often focus on developing skills in planning, communication, and organization. Many start with related roles such as assistant project managers or team coordinators and pursue certifications like CAPM or PMP to enhance their qualifications.

Job description

Project Manager, Restoration
Calgary, AB
$75,000 - $90,000

DMC Recruitment Group is pleased to partner with our client, a respected organization in the restoration industry, located in Calgary, AB, in the search for a Project Manager.

About the Opportunity
This is an opportunity for an experienced restoration professional who wants real ownership of their projects, strong client relationships, and the ability to make an impact on both project delivery and business growth.

As Project Manager, you will oversee restoration projects from initial assessment through completion. You will work closely with insurance adjusters, property owners, businesses, families, and restoration teams to keep projects moving forward while maintaining high standards for quality and customer service.

You will also play an important role in business development. Your existing relationships within the industry and local business community will help identify new opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and contribute to the continued growth of the business.

At the end of the day, you own your projects. Their quality, communication, and successful completion are a reflection of how you lead.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage restoration projects from initial assessment through remediation, rebuilding, and completion
  • Work closely with insurance adjusters to create a smooth and professional experience for insured clients
  • Assess property damage and determine appropriate scopes of work
  • Maintain quality control across all stages of each project
  • Provide responsive, professional customer service to property owners, businesses, and families
  • Lead and direct restoration teams through disaster remediation, cleaning and packing, rebuilding, and project completion
  • Create a supportive and accountable environment for field teams
  • Manage project priorities, timelines, and changing requirements
  • Build on existing industry and business relationships to identify new opportunities and grow the client base
  • Represent the organization professionally with clients, adjusters, partners, and the broader business community
What Successful Candidates Bring
  • Minimum 2 years of Project Management experience within the restoration industry
  • Hands-on experience with Xactimate
  • Established and trusted relationships within the business or restoration community
  • Strong customer service skills and a genuine interest in helping people through challenging situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivation and a goal-oriented approach to your work
  • Strong problem-solving, organization, and priority management skills
  • Comfort working with Microsoft Office and other computer-based systems
  • Valid driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract
  • Ability to meet the employer's criminal record requirements
  • Availability to participate in a rotating after-hours and weekend on-call schedule
Why This Opportunity Stands Out
Restoration project management is about more than schedules and scopes. Clients are often dealing with unexpected and stressful circumstances, and the Project Manager plays a critical role in bringing structure, communication, and confidence to the process.

This position offers the opportunity to take ownership of your work, lead teams, strengthen industry relationships, and directly contribute to business growth.

You will be well suited to the opportunity if you enjoy variety, can adapt when priorities change, and are committed to continuing your professional development.

There may also be opportunities to travel within Canada to support teammates in other regions when major events create additional demand. Travel is not required, but it is an option for those interested in supporting projects beyond their home market.

Important to Know
Disasters do not follow regular business hours. Participation in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule is a requirement of this position, including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

Interested?
If you have restoration industry experience, know how to take ownership of a project, and value strong relationships with clients, adjusters, and your team, DMC Recruitment Group would welcome the opportunity to connect with you.
Apply today to learn more about the position, the organization, and what this opportunity could offer as your next career move.
