COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

We are excited to invite a passionate and eager-to-learn Communications Intern to support our Communications Department for the 2026 – 2027 school year! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is seeking a part-time Communications Intern to join our team at our Central Office in Manhattan, NY. This intern will support strategy, planning, and execution of communications to clients, staff, and the public. Our ideal candidate is a storyteller with strong copywriting and copyediting skills, who pays close attention to detail, is highly organized, and has a desire to gain hands-on experience in a communications role. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS:

Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write, edit, and copyedit for web, social media, flyers, and reports
  • Transcribe interviews
  • Monitor online media coverage
  • Schedule social media posts and engage with audiences on social media
  • Assist with social media analytics
  • Create graphics (social media tiles, flyers, forms) in Canva or Adobe
  • Edit and resize photos
  • Update website content (WordPress)
  • Assist with administrative tasks
  • Organize media releases in online database
  • Periodic on-site support at our New York City shelters
  • Support event planning and logistics

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong writing and copyediting skills
  • Interest in HFH’s mission and clients we serve
  • Basic understanding of communications strategies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor (in-person and virtual)
  • Self-motivated problem solver who works well in a team
  • Familiar with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel; experience with WordPress preferred
  • Design experience with Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or InDesign; knowledge of Premiere and After Effects a plus
  • Must be able to work 14–21 hours per week
  • Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student (graduate student preferred)
  • Please submit writing samples (at least one but no more than three)
