What is an instructional designer project manager?

Instructional Designer Project Managers are professionals who oversee the development and implementation of educational programs and training materials. They combine expertise in instructional design—creating effective learning experiences—with project management skills to coordinate teams, timelines, and resources. Their role involves working with subject matter experts, managing budgets, setting deadlines, and ensuring that educational content meets organizational goals. They often use e-learning platforms, multimedia tools, and assessment methods to deliver high-quality training solutions. By balancing creative instructional strategies with organizational and leadership abilities, they help ensure successful learning outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an instructional designer project manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Instructional Designer Project Manager, you need expertise in instructional design principles, project management methodologies, and a relevant degree—often in education, instructional technology, or a related field. Familiarity with authoring tools like Articulate Storyline, LMS platforms, and project management software such as Asana or Trello is typically required, along with certifications like PMP or CPLP being advantageous. Outstanding communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are vital for leading teams, managing stakeholders, and ensuring project goals are met.
