What is an inside channel account manager?

An Inside Channel Account Manager is a sales professional who manages relationships with channel partners, such as resellers and distributors, from within the company rather than through in-person field visits. Their main responsibilities include supporting partner sales, providing product information, assisting with deal registrations, and helping partners achieve sales targets. They primarily communicate with partners via phone, email, and virtual meetings, and play a key role in driving indirect sales growth for their company. By nurturing these relationships, Inside Channel Account Managers help ensure that channel partners are equipped to successfully sell and support the company's products or services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an inside channel account manager?

To thrive as an Inside Channel Account Manager, you need strong sales acumen, relationship management abilities, and a background in business or related fields, often supported by a bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with CRM software (like Salesforce), partner management platforms, and sales reporting tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you build trust and foster productive partnerships. These skills are crucial for driving channel sales growth, maintaining partner satisfaction, and achieving revenue targets in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced by inside channel account managers when managing multiple partner relationships simultaneously?

Inside Channel Account Managers often juggle relationships with several channel partners at once, each with unique needs, sales cycles, and communication styles. A common challenge is ensuring consistent engagement and support across all partners, which requires strong organizational skills and proactive communication. Additionally, balancing internal priorities with partner goals can create competing demands, so effective time management and setting clear expectations are vital. Collaboration with sales, marketing, and technical teams is also essential to provide partners with the resources and information they need to succeed.

Altra: Regional Merchandise Manager
The Regional Merchandise Manager supports the regional merchandising direction for Altra footwear across Wholesale and DTC (Retail + eCommerce). You will use consumer, marketplace, and performance insights to help shape seasonal assortment priorities. You'll partner with Global Merchandising/Product, Sales, Planning, Marketing, and DTC teams to support line reviews, GTM readiness, and clear product storytelling-helping bring the right product to market at the right time. You'll balance weekly business reads with seasonal milestone work-partnering closely with Sales, Planning, and DTC/eComm to bring insights forward, keep timelines moving, and improve how the line shows up by channel.
A day in the life of a Regional Merchandise Manager at Altra looks a little like this:
  • Start the week with a quick read of sales and inventory signals (by channel/account) to flag wins, risks, and items to review with partners.
  • Join touchpoints with Sales, Planning, and DTC/eComm to align on upcoming milestones, key account needs, and in-season follow-ups.
  • Pull together notes and simple recaps after meetings (what we learned, what changed, what's next) so teams stay aligned.
  • Prepare inputs for line review moments (regional observations, account feedback, and a few clear recommendations) and coordinate with Global partners on timing.
  • Support selling readiness by helping organize and QA seasonal information (assortment snapshots, product notes, and key stories) for internal teams.
  • Spend time in the market when needed-listening to accounts, observing competitive assortments, and capturing takeaways to share with cross-functional partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support seasonal assortment direction for the Americas across Wholesale and DTC (Retail + eCommerce).
  • Bring marketplace, consumer, and account insights into line reviews and seasonal planning conversations.
  • Help build and maintain regional assortment tools and frameworks, aligned to global direction (channel segmentation, key price points, franchise vs. innovation balance).
  • Partner with Planning to review performance and support SKU productivity and assortment optimization.
  • Support GTM readiness by contributing to clarity on seasonal priorities and product stories for Sales, Marketing, and DTC teams.
  • Track milestones and deliver inputs on time; communicate updates and recommendations clearly.

What do you need to succeed?
We all have unique skills that we bring to work and celebrate every day. For this role, there are foundation skills you'll need to succeed and excel. Additionally, while formal education in a related field is great to have, we are most interested in your 4-7 years of experience in merchandising, buying, category management, or assortment-related roles.
Success is typically reflected by the quality of inputs and execution, including:
  • Clear assortment direction by channel/account and strong seasonal readiness.
  • Improved SKU productivity and healthier franchise performance.
  • Actionable insights from recaps that influence future seasonal decisions.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and on-time deliverables.
  • Comfort working with data (Excel/BI) to support sell-through analysis and seasonal recaps.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Footwear experience in performance categories (running/trail/hike) and familiarity with key accounts/specialty
  • Exposure to GTM calendars, line reviews, and product briefs.
  • Travel expected for key milestones, line reviews, and account/market visits (often ~20-30% depending on season and business needs).

This role operates on a hybrid schedule out of our HQ in Denver, CO 3 days a week.
