Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support and enhance its mission-critical hybrid infrastructure environment. This role requires extensive hands-on experience with Windows Server across on-premises and cloud environments, along with expertise in security, patching, automation, migrations, disaster recovery, networking, and enterprise production application support.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical troubleshooting skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with infrastructure, operations, security, and application teams.

Job Description
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will support, administer, secure, and optimize VDOT's hybrid infrastructure environment. Responsibilities include Windows Server administration, operating system upgrades, patching, automation, cloud migrations, vulnerability remediation, backup and disaster recovery, infrastructure monitoring, and advanced production application support.
The engineer will work across enterprise technologies including .NET, Java, SQL, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and warehouse platforms. The position also requires strong networking expertise, including a thorough understanding of OSI model layers and network protocols, to diagnose complex connectivity, infrastructure, middleware, and application issues. This individual will collaborate with the IT Portfolio Manager, Infrastructure & Operations teams, and other cross-functional stakeholders to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure solutions.
Responsibilities
Infrastructure Operations & Administration
  • Administer, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize Windows Server environments across on-premises and cloud infrastructure.
  • Perform operating system upgrades, patch installation, testing, and ongoing system updates.
  • Plan and execute server migrations, including moving workloads from on-premises environments to cloud platforms.
  • Support mission-critical infrastructure and improve system performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Patching, Monitoring & Automation
  • Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts and Windows Server automation for centralized and repetitive administrative tasks.
  • Manage recurring patching cycles and system updates across server environments.
  • Use SCCM or similar platforms for automated patch management, deployment, and reporting.
  • Monitor infrastructure services and system performance to proactively identify and resolve issues.

Security & Compliance
  • Implement and maintain server security configurations, including endpoint protection, access controls, and system-hardening standards.
  • Perform server and application vulnerability remediation to maintain security and compliance.
  • Support security tools and operational processes for consistent infrastructure protection and monitoring.

Backup & Disaster Recovery
  • Oversee backup operations and recovery processes for mission-critical environments.
  • Develop, refine, and support disaster recovery plans designed to minimize downtime and prevent data loss.
  • Support recovery activities and validate infrastructure readiness for disaster recovery scenarios.

Production Application Support
  • Provide advanced server-level support for enterprise applications using .NET, Java, SQL, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and warehouse technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve high-impact production issues across infrastructure, server, application, and middleware layers.
  • Support complex production applications operating within hybrid infrastructure environments.

Networking & Systems Integration
  • Apply strong knowledge of OSI model functionality and network protocols to diagnose connectivity, infrastructure, and application issues.
  • Troubleshoot network-related dependencies affecting servers and production applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address infrastructure requirements and support application deployments and enhancements.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience with Windows Server in hybrid on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience translating user requests into technical solutions, providing technical support, and communicating effectively in English verbally and in writing.
  • Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience with operating system upgrades, patch installation, and testing.
  • Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience using PowerShell and Windows Server scripting to perform centralized tasks.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience performing regular patching and system updates to maintain security and stability.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience overseeing backup operations and recovery processes in mission-critical environments.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience planning and executing server migrations, including moving workloads from on-premises environments to the cloud.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience supporting environments using technologies including .NET, Java, SQL/Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and related enterprise platforms.
