How much do informatics engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for informatics engineer in the United States is $101,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $84,000.00 and $116,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an informatics engineer?

Informatics Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain systems that manage and process information, often in fields like healthcare, business, or research. They combine expertise in computer science, information technology, and domain-specific knowledge to develop solutions that improve data management, analysis, and security. Their work often involves creating software tools, managing databases, and ensuring the efficient flow of information within organizations. Informatics Engineers play a crucial role in integrating technology with real-world processes to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.

How does an informatics engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a healthcare setting?

Informatics Engineers often work closely with clinicians, IT professionals, and administrative staff to ensure that health information systems meet the needs of all stakeholders. They facilitate communication between technical and non-technical team members, translate clinical requirements into technical specifications, and support the integration of new technologies. This collaborative approach helps ensure that data workflows are efficient, secure, and aligned with healthcare regulations. Regular meetings, user training sessions, and feedback loops are common aspects of this teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an informatics engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Informatics Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data management, and information systems, usually supported by a relevant degree and experience in software development. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or Java), database systems (like SQL), and health informatics standards or certifications (e.g., HL7, Certified Health Informatician) is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure the efficient design, implementation, and maintenance of information systems that support organizational goals and data-driven decision-making.

What is the difference between Informatics Engineer vs Data Analyst?

AspectInformatics EngineerData Analyst
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related fieldsBachelor's in Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields; often with data analysis certifications
Work EnvironmentHealthcare, technology, or research settings focusing on information systemsBusiness, finance, marketing, or healthcare sectors analyzing data trends
Employer & Industry UsageDevelops and manages health or information systems in healthcare and tech industriesInterprets data to inform business decisions across various industries

Informatics Engineers and Data Analysts both work with data, but Informatics Engineers focus on developing and managing information systems, especially in healthcare and tech sectors. Data Analysts primarily interpret data to support business insights. While their skills overlap, their roles differ in scope and application.

Is an informatics engineer still in demand?

Informatics engineers are currently in demand due to the growing reliance on healthcare data management, electronic health records, and health IT systems. They often require skills in programming, data analysis, and knowledge of healthcare regulations, making them valuable in both healthcare and technology sectors.

What does an informatics engineer do?

An informatics engineer designs, develops, and maintains information systems and software solutions to manage and analyze data effectively. They often work with programming languages, databases, and data analysis tools to improve healthcare, business, or technology processes. Strong problem-solving skills and knowledge of data security are essential in this role.

Job description

Job Summary

Medpace is expanding its Clinical Informatics team within the newly created Insights & Analytics department and is seeking a Manager to help lead this initiative in the United States. Medpace is a contract research organization that supports pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies through the planning and execution of clinical trials. The Clinical Informatics team develops dashboards, analyses, and applications that help study teams make data-driven decisions for the operation of their trials. This team also supports enterprise-wide application development that leverages interconnected data across Medpace and external systems to improve trial operations, visibility, and efficiency.

The Manager will serve as both a hands‑on contributor and people leader for a growing team with an evolving scope. This individual will partner closely with Clinical and Medical Operations, Software Development, IT Architecture, Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, Biostatistics, and other cross‑functional stakeholders to translate operational needs into scalable data products. The ideal candidate is technically strong, comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment, and excited to help shape team processes, standards, and strategy as the department continues to mature.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a US-based team of Clinical Informatics analysts while contributing directly to high-priority technical deliverables;
  • Evaluate operational data needs for assigned studies and recommend strategic, study-specific approaches to dashboards, analyses, applications, and other data products;
  • Partner with clinical and medical operations, software development, IT architecture, data engineering, business intelligence, and biostatistics teams to design and deliver scalable solutions;
  • Interact with relational data at both study‑and enterprise-level inclusive of query, wrangling, analysis, visualization, validation, and reporting activities;
  • Establish and refine team processes, technical standards, documentation practices, validation expectations, and prioritization frameworks as the team grows;
  • Mentor analysts in programming, clinical trial operations, stakeholder communication, project planning, and solution design;
  • Support resource planning, sprint prioritization, project intake, and cross‑functional communication for informatics workstreams; and
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, data accessibility, and enterprise‑wide use of interconnected Medpace data.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in informatics, computer science/engineering, biomedical engineering, health information, statistics, data science, life sciences, or a related field; advanced degree preferred;
  • Clinical research, clinical operations, or contract research organization experience;
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or managing technical or analytical team members;
  • Strong programming experience in R and SQL (additional experience with Snowflake and Python is highly valued);
  • Experience developing dashboards, web applications, analytical tools, or other data products for business or operational users;
  • Ability to balance hands‑on technical contribution with team leadership, stakeholder management, and strategic planning;
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to translate complex operational questions into data‑driven solutions; and,
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively across technical, operational, and clinical teams.
Additional Considerations

This is a unique opportunity to join a newly formed team and help define how Clinical Informatics supports study execution across Medpace. The successful candidate should be prepared to contribute immediately to technical deliverables while also building leadership practices, team structure, and scalable processes for a function expected to continue evolving over the next several years. Degree level, work experience, interview performance, programming proficiency, and demonstrated leadership potential will be considered. For candidates who progress to the interview stage, a programming assessment may be conducted; details will be shared during scheduling confirmation.
