What is individual giving in fundraising?

Individual giving refers to the donations and financial contributions made by private individuals to nonprofit organizations or charitable causes. This type of fundraising is a crucial revenue stream for many nonprofits, often including one-time gifts, recurring donations, major gifts, and planned giving. Individual giving involves building relationships with donors, recognizing their support, and encouraging ongoing engagement. Fundraisers working in this area may use events, campaigns, and personalized outreach to inspire generosity and strengthen donor loyalty.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Individual Giving roles within nonprofit organizations?

Professionals in Individual Giving often face the challenge of building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors, which requires consistent communication and personalized stewardship. Balancing the need to meet fundraising targets with providing meaningful donor engagement can be demanding, especially during busy campaign periods. Additionally, staying updated on donor management technology and adapting to shifting donor preferences are important aspects of the role. Collaborating closely with marketing, events, and major gifts teams is essential for creating cohesive fundraising strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Individual Giving professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Individual Giving professional, you need a solid background in fundraising strategy, donor stewardship, and relationship management, often supported by a degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with donor management CRMs like Salesforce NPSP, Raiser's Edge, and digital fundraising platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and analytical thinking help build trust and engage donors effectively. These competencies are crucial for cultivating lasting donor relationships and meeting fundraising goals in a competitive nonprofit environment.

Job description

Position: Director of Individual Giving
Reports to: Senior Director of Mission Advancement
Status: Full-time Exempt
Start Date: August 31, 2026
Location: Primarily remote; requires limited scheduled in-person participation.
THE ORGANIZATION
The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) protects and advances the health rights of low income and underserved individuals. NHeLP engages in national, state, and local advocacy efforts, including analyses of federal and state laws, policy advocacy, litigation, continuing legal education, and individual technical support. We work with lawyers and advocates, community based entities, federal and state policymakers, health care providers, and clients. NHeLP is committed to health equityโ€”ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to be healthyโ€”and to cultivating an internal environment that empowers an exceptional and diverse staff. For more information, see our Equity Stance.
THE TEAM
The Individual Giving team is part of NHeLP's Mission Advancement Team (MAT), which brings together Individual Giving, Foundation Partnerships, Communications, Pro bono, and Knowledge Management & Innovation to advance the organization's mission through integrated fundraising, strategic communications, and organizational learning. Together, MAT is responsible for building the relationships, resources, systems, and visibility that sustain and expand NHeLP's impact and advance its mission.

Within MAT, the Individual Giving team raises and stewards flexible revenue that supports NHeLP's mission by building durable relationships with individual donors, volunteers, Board members, ambassadors, law firm networks, and mission-aligned prospects. The Director is responsible for the individual giving strategy, major gifts growth, donor engagement, and volunteer fundraising activation. The Senior Manager is responsible for development operations, annual fund execution, stewardship, and the mid-level donor pipeline. The Director oversees the Senior Manager. Together, the team is responsible for expanding the major donor pipeline, increasing retention and upgrade rates, strengthening donor systems, and growing the program. The Director also plays a key role in fostering a culture of philanthropy across NHeLP by helping staff, leadership, Board members, and volunteers understand and participate in donor engagement, stewardship, and fundraising efforts.

THE POSITION
Expand and lead NHeLP's individual giving program with a focus on major gifts growth, donor strategy, and a scalable donor pipeline. The Director serves as a key ambassador for NHeLP, translating complex legal and policy work into compelling fundraising messages that inspire philanthropic investment in the organization's mission. The Director will act as the strategic leader of the individual giving function and design the portfolio, pipeline, and revenue strategy. As part of that work, the Director leads solicitation strategies and secures major gifts, while partnering closely with the Executive Director, Senior Director of Mission Advancement, Board and Development Committee on key relationships. Success in this role will be reflected in growth in major gift revenue, donors giving, Board and Executive Director fundraising engagement, an expanded major donor pipeline, and improved donor retention and upgrade rates.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify upgrade opportunities in close coordination with the Senior Manager.
Board, Ambassador & Volunteer Fundraising Leadership (20%)
  • Prepare and coordinate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for the Executive Director, Board members, and volunteer leaders, ensuring timely follow-up and accountability.
  • Lead the Development Committee by setting agendas, preparing materials, facilitating meetings, and translating discussions into action.
  • Set strategic direction for the Board of Ambassadors, including recruitment, senior relationships, programming, introductions, referrals, and campaign participation goals.
  • Partner with the Executive Director on personalized cultivation and stewardship for Board members and key donor relationships.
Campaigns, Planned Giving & Cross-Team Partnerships (15%)
  • Set strategy and goals for year-end appeals, Giving Tuesday, challenge match
  • campaigns, and special initiatives.
  • Direct challenge campaign architecture, including matching gift structure, announcement strategy, major donor co-cultivation, and personalized ask amounts.
  • Build and maintain a planned giving pipeline and program identity, and coordinate with the Senior Manager to ensure legacy donors are tracked in Salesforce.
  • Partner with Communications, Institutional Giving, Legal/Policy, and Pro Bono teams on donor communications, storytelling, corporate-affiliated donors, and law firm/pro bono pipelines.
  • Translate NHeLP's complex legal, policy, and advocacy work into compelling donor centered messaging and cases for support that inspire philanthropic engagement.

Team Leadership, Budget & Oversight (10%)
  • Supervise the Senior Manager, establish priorities, monitor progress against goals, and serve as the primary individual giving advisor to Mission Advancement leadership.
  • Develop the annual individual giving budget and revenue projections for COO and Board reporting.
  • Direct monthly and quarterly revenue reporting to leadership, oversee Harbor Compliance and state charitable registration filings, and review monthly revenue reconciliation prepared by the Senior Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least six years of progressively responsible nonprofit fundraising experience, including individual giving strategy, annual revenue planning, donor segmentation, and donor pipeline development.
  • Direct experience managing and growing a major gifts portfolio, including qualifying prospects, building cultivation plans, making solicitations, closing gifts, and stewarding donors at the higher capacity giving tier.
  • Experience partnering with executive leaders, Board members, volunteer committees, or ambassadors to support donor cultivation, solicitations, stewardship, pledge follow-up, and donor introductions.
  • Experience supervising staff or leading cross-functional fundraising work with colleagues in communications, finance, programs/legal, institutional giving, or executive leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience required.

MUST-HAVE SKILLS & EXPERIENCES
