Their main role is to manage supplier relationships, negotiate contracts, and ensure cost-effective purchasing strategies for these indirect materials and services. They work closely with various departments to understand their needs and maintain quality while optimizing spending. Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | COMMODITY BUYER | MANUFACTURING | Greater Houston, TX area

A global manufacturer of engineered industrial systems is hiring a Commodity Buyer to own sourcing and purchasing for assigned material categories at its Texas production facility. This is a hands-on procurement seat: you keep the plant supplied, hold suppliers to cost, quality, and delivery, and head off the shortages that stop a line. You will negotiate directly with vendors, cut and manage purchase orders, run inventory and replenishment, and work day-to-day with engineering, operations, and logistics. The right person turns reactive buying into a managed program and is measured on landed cost, on-time delivery, and inventory turns.

  • Anticipated $60K–$75K, based on experience
  • Full suite of benefits: Health / Dental / Vision, PTO
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, on-site, with the possibility of one remote day

Overview

  • Own sourcing and purchasing for assigned commodities so production never waits on material
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery with vendors and hold them to on-time, in-full performance
  • Set inventory at the level that keeps the plant running without tying up cash, alongside operations and maintenance
  • Create and manage purchase orders, track shipments, and clear price, quantity, quality, and delivery discrepancies fast
  • Find and land cost-reduction and process wins without giving up quality or delivery
  • Keep ERP material-master data accurate and reconcile supplier invoices
  • Run Kanban and vendor-managed inventory replenishment and scheduling agreements
  • Sit in NCR reviews on defective material and drive root-cause corrective action
  • Align buying with what the floor actually needs across engineering, operations, maintenance, and logistics

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations, or a related field
  • APICS, CPSM, or comparable supply chain certification (preferred)
  • 2+ years of recent purchasing/supply-chain experience in a manufacturing or assembly environment (strongly preferred)
  • Hands-on ERP/MRP experience; Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365) (strongly preferred)
  • Direct sourcing and supplier management across commodity categories — MRO, hardware, components, coatings/paint, steel/aluminum, or similar industrial materials
  • Demonstrated supplier negotiation and cost-reduction results
  • Familiarity with Kanban and vendor-managed inventory replenishment
  • Experience with NCR, root-cause, and corrective-action processes
  • Effective working cross-functionally in a matrixed manufacturing organization
