What are Independent Traders?

Independent traders are individuals who buy and sell financial instruments such as stocks, bonds, currencies, or derivatives using their own capital, rather than working for a financial institution. They make their own trading decisions, manage their own risk, and are responsible for their own profits and losses. Independent traders often use online trading platforms and may trade part-time or full-time, depending on their goals and experience. They must stay informed about market trends, economic news, and trading strategies to succeed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Trader, you need a deep understanding of financial markets, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in risk management, often backed by a degree in finance or economics. Mastery of trading platforms like MetaTrader or Thinkorswim, as well as familiarity with charting software and real-time data feeds, is essential. Discipline, emotional resilience, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure are standout soft skills. These abilities enable traders to navigate market volatility, manage risk effectively, and achieve consistent profitability.

About Us:Founded 20 years ago and headquartered in Chicago, the DV Group of financial services firms has grown to more than 600 people operating throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Since spinning out of a large brokerage firm in 2016, DV Trading has rapidly scaled as an independent proprietary trading firm utilizing its own capital, trading strategies, and risk management methodologies to provide liquidity to worldwide financial markets and hedging opportunities to commodity producers and users. Now, DV group affiliates include two broker dealers, a cryptocurrency market making firm, and a bourgeoning investment adviser.
Overview:
DV Trading is looking for a proven Relative Value Trader who wants the freedom to run capital, scale ideas quickly, and trade on a high-performance proprietary platform. This is an opportunity for a trader who already knows how to generate alpha in correlated products and wants the infrastructure, capital, and autonomy to grow a strategy without the constraints typical of larger institutions. For the first 3 to 6 months, this role will be based in Chicago to accelerate integration with the team, platform, and trading environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Run your own relative value trading strategy using DV Trading's capital
  • Identify, execute, and scale opportunities across correlated products
  • Build, refine, and improve models, signals, and execution approaches
  • Own risk, positioning, and P&L with a high degree of autonomy
  • Leverage DV Trading's platform, technology, and support to grow your book

Requirements:
  • At least 1 year of experience on a professional relative value trading desk
  • A track record of trading profitable RV strategies in a professional setting
  • Strong preference for experience using factor models in correlated products
  • Sharp quantitative instincts, strong market intuition, and disciplined risk management
  • A self-directed trader who wants real ownership and accountability

Benefits:
  • Discretionary bonus eligibility
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA, FSA, and Dependent Care options
  • Employer Paid Group Term Life and AD&D Insurance
  • Voluntary LTD, Life & AD&D insurance
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid parental leave
  • Wellness Programs

Why DV Trading:
  • Trade with firm capital
  • Run your own strategy
  • Move fast in a performance-driven environment
  • Access the platform and support needed to scale

Annual compensation range $100-200K base + profit share with meaningful upside
