Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for multiple clients and handle their own business operations, such as invoicing and taxes. Their responsibilities often include assembling raw footage, adding effects, syncing audio, and producing polished final videos according to client specifications. Independent contractors have the flexibility to choose their projects and may work remotely or on-site. This role requires strong technical skills, creativity, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor video editor?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Video Editor, you need expert proficiency in video editing, storytelling, and familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, often supported by a portfolio of past work. Mastery of technical tools such as color grading software, motion graphics applications, and collaborative platforms like Frame.io is commonly expected. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with clients and deliver projects on deadline. These skills ensure you consistently produce high-quality content that meets client expectations and stands out in a competitive freelance market.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor video editors, and how can they be managed?

Independent contractor video editors often face challenges such as managing fluctuating workloads, meeting tight deadlines, and aligning with diverse client expectations. Successfully handling these challenges typically involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with clients, and the ability to quickly adapt to different project styles and requirements. Job description

About the Job

We’re looking for a Social Video Editor / Motion Graphics Artist who lives inside a timeline, knows a great hook when they see one, and thrives on the challenge of making content that stops the scroll.

If you’re passionate about short-form social content, have a sharp eye for pacing, and believe that testing variations is just as important as the edit itself—keep reading.

What You’ll Do:

  • Edit and deliver high-quality short-form social videos at speed—because testing content means producing options, not just one cut
  • Create multiple variations of edits (different hooks, pacing, lengths) to support performance testing and internal creative reviews
  • Develop motion graphics that elevate content and feel native to the platform—not like a slideshow
  • Mix music, add sound effects, and handle audio in a way that makes people want to keep watching
  • Apply color correction and grading to ensure visual consistency and quality across deliverables
  • Support our photography and videography team by editing the content they capture—social posts, brand content, and beyond
  • Assist with ad production and web video projects as brand needs arise
  • Format and optimize content for every platform and aspect ratio—Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and wherever else we show up
  • Stay current on trends and platform behavior so our content always feels timely and relevant
  • Juggle multiple projects and deadlines without losing quality or momentum

What You Bring:

  • 1–3 years of video editing experience, with a strong focus on social and short-form content
  • Solid skills in Adobe After Effects and the broader Adobe suite (Premiere Pro, Audition, etc.)
  • A real understanding of what makes social content perform—hooks, pacing, variation—and how to test it
  • Experience with music mixing and sound design: you know how audio shapes a viewer’s experience
  • Working knowledge of color correction and grading
  • Comfortable taking a project from raw footage to final deliverable independently
  • Strong attention to detail—one frame off is still off
  • Good communicator who can take direction and give clear creative feedback
  • Experience creating content for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and similar platforms
  • Comfortable collaborating across teams—whether that’s photo/video, brand, or 3D
