What is an independent contractor video editor?

Independent contractor video editors are professionals who are hired on a freelance or contract basis to edit video content for clients. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for multiple clients and handle their own business operations, such as invoicing and taxes. Their responsibilities often include assembling raw footage, adding effects, syncing audio, and producing polished final videos according to client specifications. Independent contractors have the flexibility to choose their projects and may work remotely or on-site. This role requires strong technical skills, creativity, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor video editor?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Video Editor, you need expert proficiency in video editing, storytelling, and familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, often supported by a portfolio of past work. Mastery of technical tools such as color grading software, motion graphics applications, and collaborative platforms like Frame.io is commonly expected. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you collaborate with clients and deliver projects on deadline. These skills ensure you consistently produce high-quality content that meets client expectations and stands out in a competitive freelance market.

What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor video editors, and how can they be managed?

Independent contractor video editors often face challenges such as managing fluctuating workloads, meeting tight deadlines, and aligning with diverse client expectations. Successfully handling these challenges typically involves strong organizational skills, effective communication with clients, and the ability to quickly adapt to different project styles and requirements. Building a network of repeat clients and setting clear contracts can help provide stability, while staying up-to-date with the latest editing software ensures continued competitiveness in the field.

Job description

About us

Revelry is a modern fashion brand creating elevated, thoughtfully designed pieces for bridesmaids, wedding guests, groomsmen, and special occasions. Founded in Austin, Revelry combines contemporary design, premium fabrics, inclusive sizing, and a personalized shopping experience to make every occasion feel effortless.

Our visual content plays an important role in bringing the Revelry experience to life—from showcasing our collections and fabrics to highlighting real weddings, styling inspiration, product details, and the moments our customers are celebrating.

We are looking for a talented Senior Video Editor to help shape that visual storytelling.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the editing process for Revelry's brand, product, social, marketing, and editorial video content.
  • Turn raw footage, interviews, product footage, campaign assets, photography, graphics, and creative briefs into compelling finished videos.
  • Develop strong editorial concepts and structures from existing footage and creative direction.
  • Edit fashion and product-focused content with a strong understanding of pacing, composition, movement, detail, and visual storytelling.
  • Create engaging short-form content for social platforms, including vertical video and platform-specific cutdowns.
  • Edit longer-form brand, campaign, editorial, and storytelling pieces when required.
  • Create multiple edits, lengths, aspect ratios, and versions from existing footage for different marketing channels.
  • Select music, sound effects, and other audio elements that complement the brand and enhance the emotional impact of each piece.
  • Perform dialogue cleanup, audio balancing, sound design, color correction, and basic color grading.
  • Incorporate typography, captions, titles, transitions, lower thirds, motion graphics, and other visual elements where appropriate.
  • Maintain a consistent visual language across Revelry's video content.
  • Collaborate remotely with creative, marketing, brand, and other internal stakeholders to understand objectives and translate feedback into strong final edits.
  • Take ownership of projects from receiving raw assets through rough cut, revisions, final approval, and delivery.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve an edit rather than relying solely on provided instructions.
  • Organize footage, project files, graphics, music, assets, and exports so projects remain easy to manage and collaborate on remotely.
  • Maintain high technical and creative standards across every deliverable.
  • Ensure final videos meet the technical specifications required for their intended platforms.
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and consistency.
  • Help develop efficient editing workflows, templates, and post-production standards as Revelry's video content continues to grow.

Requirements

Compensation

$90,000–$120,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

  • 5+ years of professional video editing experience, preferably within fashion, beauty, lifestyle, e-commerce, advertising, media, or another visually driven brand.
  • A strong portfolio or reel demonstrating professional editing ability.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or comparable professional editing software.
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling, pacing, composition, rhythm, and editorial structure.
  • A highly developed visual eye and appreciation for fashion, styling, design, and premium brand aesthetics.
  • Strong knowledge of audio editing, sound design, color correction, and finishing.
  • Experience creating short-form social content and platform-specific video.
  • Experience working with existing footage to create multiple creative outputs and variations.
  • Familiarity with motion graphics and tools such as After Effects is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly with fashion, product presentation, typography, color, and visual consistency.
  • Strong creative judgment and the ability to determine what makes an edit more compelling.
  • Ability to take creative direction while also bringing your own editorial perspective.
  • Strong organizational and project-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver work on schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
  • Comfortable working independently, taking ownership, and keeping projects moving without constant supervision.
