What does an independent contractor electrical engineer do?

An Independent Contractor Electrical Engineer is a self-employed professional who provides electrical engineering services to clients on a contract basis. They design, develop, and test electrical systems for various industries, including construction, manufacturing, and technology. Unlike full-time employees, independent contractors typically work on short-term or project-based assignments, handling tasks such as circuit design, system integration, troubleshooting, and compliance testing. They must manage their own business operations, including invoicing, taxes, and client relationships. This role offers flexibility but requires strong technical expertise and business skills to succeed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor electrical engineer?

Independent Contractor Electrical Engineers need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, project management, and often a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard design software like AutoCAD and MATLAB, as well as familiarity with relevant codes and optional certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is highly valued. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help these professionals effectively coordinate with clients and deliver projects independently. Mastering these competencies ensures successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and compliance with technical standards in a self-directed work environment.

Can independent contractor electrical engineers be self-employed?

Yes, independent contractor electrical engineers can be self-employed, working on a project basis or through their own business. They typically handle their own taxes, licensing, and client relationships, and may need relevant certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Self-employment allows flexibility but requires managing business operations and compliance with industry standards.

How much do freelance electrical engineers make?

Freelance electrical engineers typically earn between $50,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, specialization, and project scope. Rates can vary from $30 to $150 per hour, with highly skilled engineers or those with niche expertise commanding higher fees. Successful freelancers often work on a project basis, requiring strong technical skills and client management abilities.

Who We Are:

PRIME AE Group, Inc. (www.primeeng.com) is a nationally ranked, full-service architecture and engineering firm driven by collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to strengthening the communities we serve. With a growing footprint of offices across the country and a diverse team of more than 550 professionals, we partner with public and private sector clients to deliver thoughtful, high-impact solutions across transportation, education, healthcare, municipal, federal, commercial, and recreational markets.

As PRIME AE continues to expand its capabilities, geographic reach, and leadership bench, this is an exciting time to join a team that is building momentum, investing in growth, and empowering leaders to make a lasting impact.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer I (PE Level) to join our growing MEP team in one of our offices across Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, or Indiana.

In this role, you will lead the design and development of complex electrical systems across a diverse portfolio of building types and market sectors. You will collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and field personnel to ensure electrical systems are designed and executed to meet project requirements, applicable codes, and industry standards.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute technical expertise on high-impact projects while mentoring junior engineers and supporting multidisciplinary project teams from concept through construction.

Project types include Military/Department of Defense facilities and bases, Healthcare, Federal, Justice, K–12, Higher Education, Corporate Commercial, Pharmacy, Retail, Multifamily & Assisted Living, Hospitality, Cultural & Historic, Data Centers, Industrial, and Residential.

What You'll Do:

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will lead electrical system design efforts and support project teams through all phases of design and construction. You will provide technical leadership, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and ensure that designs meet client expectations and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of electrical systems from concept through final construction documentation.
  • Perform electrical engineering analyses and calculations to support system design and performance.
  • Develop innovative solutions to complex design challenges across multiple project types.
  • Coordinate with architects, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, and contractors to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Review and apply applicable local, state, and federal codes and standards related to electrical system design.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and designers within the MEP department.
  • Participate in design reviews and support construction-phase services as needed.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 8+ years of experience in electrical system design.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing in the state where the position is based (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience designing electrical systems including power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, grounding and bonding, fire alarm systems, and low-voltage systems such as telecommunications, paging, and nurse call.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with electrical analysis software such as SKM and lighting photometric software such as Visual.
  • Experience with healthcare or federal projects is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, industry standards, and electrical design practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects through multiple phases of design and construction.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments in a deadline-driven environment.

Why PRIME AE:

We don’t just fill positions; we invest in people.

At PRIME AE, you’ll find a supportive, flexible environment where careers are built intentionally, not accidentally. You’ll work on projects that improve everyday life, alongside colleagues who challenge and respect one another.

Our Commitment:

PRIME AE Group is committed to creating an inclusive environment where differences are respected, voices are heard, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
