To thrive as an Independent Contractor in Business Development, you need strong sales acumen, market research ability, and a proven track record in generating leads and closing deals. Familiarity with CRM platforms, digital marketing tools, and relevant industry certifications like Certified Professional Sales Person (CPSP) are often valuable. Outstanding self-motivation, relationship-building, and negotiation skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are crucial for driving business growth and succeeding independently in a competitive marketplace.

What is an independent contractor business development professional?

Independent Contractor Business Development professionals are self-employed individuals who help organizations identify new business opportunities, establish client relationships, and drive growth, typically on a contract basis rather than as full-time employees. They may be responsible for lead generation, market research, sales presentations, and negotiating deals. Their flexible, project-based roles allow companies to access business development expertise without a long-term commitment. Independent contractors are responsible for their own taxes and benefits, and often work with multiple clients or industries.

What are some common challenges independent contractor business development professionals face when building client relationships?

Independent contractor business development professionals often encounter challenges such as establishing credibility with new clients, managing multiple client expectations simultaneously, and navigating periods of inconsistent workflow. Since they operate independently, building trust is crucial and requires strong communication and follow-up skills. Additionally, independent contractors must proactively network and market their services to maintain a steady pipeline of opportunities, all while keeping up with administrative tasks without the support of a larger team.

Job description

ABOUT ALBERS AEROSPACE
Albers Aerospace is a rapidly growing, mission-driven aerospace and defense company serving the United States Government, defense prime contractors, and allied partners. Our capabilities include precision manufacturing, specialty metal coatings and finishing, munitions and subsystem integration, specialized weapon-system containers, FAA Part 145 special mission aircraft modifications, ISR technology, laser systems, missile guidance research and development, testing, and technical services.
Albers is expanding rapidly and building the people, systems, and industrial capacity required for sustained growth. We are headquartered in McKinney, TX, with precision manufacturing operations in Grand Prairie, TX and Tucson, AZ; a specialty metal coatings facility in North Richland Hills, TX performing hard anodize, chem-film, and chromate finishing for customers; specialized container operations in Accident, MD, Hayden, ID, and Amarillo, TX; and additional engineering and aircraft-modification capabilities in McKinney. Our culture is warfighter-first, team-oriented, accountable, and committed to delivering value without unnecessary bureaucracy.
Albers Aerospace is seeking a Business Development Manager to develop customer relationships and grow opportunities across our industrial manufacturing, specialty metal coatings, and specialized container businesses. This individual will identify, qualify, support capture of, and help close opportunities with U.S. Government customers, defense prime contractors, and commercial aerospace partners requiring precision manufacturing, specialty metal finishing, complex subsystem integration, and purpose-built storage and shipping solutions.
The Business Development Manager will manage an assigned opportunity pipeline from early customer engagement through contract award. Working with operations, engineering, contracts, finance, pricing, quality, and business development leadership, this individual will translate customer needs into executable solutions and coordinate compliant proposals. The role represents the full breadth of Albers capabilities while focusing on precision manufacturing and specialized containers.
The ideal candidate combines practical aerospace and defense business-development experience with the speed, initiative, and hands-on accountability required in a rapidly growing small business. We need a collaborative relationship builder with sound business judgment and a warfighter-first mindset who follows disciplined growth practices without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Market Development & Opportunity Pipeline
โ€ข Develop and execute assigned account and market growth plans for precision manufacturing, specialty metal coatings and finishing, aerospace and defense subsystems, and specialized weapon-system containers.
โ€ข Build, qualify, and maintain a measurable pipeline of assigned opportunities aligned with company strategy, capacity, capabilities, and financial objectives.
Customer Engagement & Relationship Development
โ€ข Use existing relationships and develop new contacts with U.S. Government organizations, program offices, depots, laboratories, and Tier 1 aerospace and defense prime contractors to generate qualified opportunities.
โ€ข Create new relationships through targeted outreach, industry associations, conferences, trade shows, customer visits, and strategic networking; develop trusted-advisor credibility with technical, contracting, and executive stakeholders.
โ€ข Represent all Albers business capabilities accurately and confidently, connecting customer requirements to manufacturing, engineering, integration, special mission aircraft, R&D, and logistics solutions as appropriate.
Capture Strategy & Proposal Leadership
โ€ข Lead or support qualification, capture planning, competitive assessment, win strategy, teaming, solution development, and gate reviews for assigned pursuits.
โ€ข Coordinate the proposal process across operations, engineering, contracts, finance, pricing, quality, supply chain, HR, and business development leadership.
โ€ข Develop and coordinate compliant proposal content, past performance, basis-of-estimate inputs, and customer presentations; track schedules, actions, reviews, and approvals.
Government & Prime Contractor Business Acumen
โ€ข Navigate Federal acquisition and defense-prime procurement processes, including FAR/DFARS environments, solicitations, contract vehicles, source-selection practices, flow-down requirements, export controls, and supplier onboarding.
โ€ข Build account intelligence on customer budgets, requirements, acquisition timelines, competitors, incumbents, and decision makers; convert intelligence into actionable pursuit strategies and realistic forecasts.
Growth Operations & Cross-Functional Leadership
โ€ข Partner with manufacturing and container operations to confirm capacity, technical feasibility, schedule, quality, and cost assumptions before customer commitments are made.
โ€ข Use established business development rhythms, pipeline metrics, CRM discipline, and repeatable capture practices; recommend practical improvements as the company grows.
โ€ข Provide forecasts, pursuit status, risks, resource needs, and recommendations to business development leadership; contribute to a collaborative, accountable growth culture.

LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES & CULTURAL FIT

โ€ข Warfighter Focus - You understand that winning the right work matters because Albers products and services support mission readiness, survivability, and national security.
โ€ข Builder's Mentality - You create relationships, pipelines, capture plans, and repeatable processes from the ground up. You act with urgency and do not wait for perfect information.
โ€ข Compliance Without Bureaucracy - You understand Government and prime-contractor requirements, but you apply them proportionately and efficiently. You do not use process as an excuse for delay.
โ€ข Industrial Credibility - You can discuss precision manufacturing, technical data, producibility, quality, schedule, supply chain, subsystem integration, and specialized containers with customers and internal experts.
โ€ข Accountability & Collaboration - You own outcomes, follow through on commitments, communicate candidly, and unite operations and functional teams around a credible win strategy.
WHY THIS ROLE
This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to Albers' growth by connecting differentiated manufacturing and container capabilities to urgent customer needs. You will work closely with business development leadership, operating sites, and technical teams and be accountable for turning assigned relationships and pursuits into sustainable business.
โ€ข Build a strategic portfolio across Government, prime-contractor, and commercial aerospace customers while representing a broad, differentiated set of capabilities.
โ€ข Help strengthen a scalable growth system that combines disciplined capture practices with small-business speed and responsiveness.
โ€ข Competitive compensation commensurate with experience, including performance incentives tied to individual capture results and company growth milestones.
