The Biomedical Engineering program in the College of Engineering & Mines at the University of North Dakota is a pioneer in innovation-based learning (IBL), a model aimed at providing students with the necessary skills to be leaders in biomedical innovation.
We are searching for one or more Assistant Professor, tenure-track faculty members to support the program's teaching and research missions. Expected start date August 16, 2026.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Biomedical Engineering.
- Employ an Innovation-Based Learning (IBL) approach to biomedical engineering instruction.
- Develop and sustain an externally funded research program in Biomedical Engineering.
- Advise and mentor students in course planning and fulfillment of graduation requirements.
- Communicate effectively in English with students, families, faculty, staff, and professional colleagues, both in person and at a distance.
- Approximately 40% teaching, 50% research, and 10% service during the initial two years.
- Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and/or undergraduate courses in the faculty member's area of expertise.
- Contribute meaningful service to the department, college, university, and the broader professional community.
- Broad knowledge of emerging biomedical engineering challenges and research potentials
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students
- Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
- Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the College of Engineering and Mines
- Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering, computing, or quantitative biomedical discipline
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications- Strong record of high-quality, peer-reviewed publications in leading journals or conferences appropriate to career stage
- Evidence of originality, rigor, and potential for national or international research impact
- A clearly articulated, innovative research agenda that demonstrates independence from doctoral and postdoctoral mentors
- Experience in successful competition for external research funding from federal agencies and/or industry
- Experience conducting interdisciplinary research involving engineering, medicine, life sciences, data science, or clinical partners
- Experience in technology translation, clinical research, industry collaboration, startups, or intellectual property development
- Potential to teach core and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in biomedical engineering
- Commitment to high-quality, evidence-based teaching and curriculum development
- Experience using project-based learning pedagogy
- Strong written communication skills suitable for grant writing, scholarly dissemination, and interdisciplinary collaboration
- Experience working with industry
