What company makes Impella?

Impella is a brand of medical devices manufactured by Abiomed, a company specializing in heart pump technology. These devices are used in cardiac support and require healthcare professionals to be trained in their operation. Job roles related to Impella may involve clinical, technical, or sales responsibilities within the healthcare industry.

What are some typical responsibilities of a healthcare provider specializing in Impella device support?

Impella specialists are responsible for the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of the Impella heart pump during procedures such as high-risk PCI or in cases of cardiogenic shock. They collaborate closely with interventional cardiologists, nurses, and other members of the cardiac care team to monitor device performance and patient hemodynamics. Daily tasks may also include educating staff on device management, maintaining documentation, and participating in emergency response situations. This role requires a proactive approach to patient care and a readiness to address complex, time-sensitive clinical scenarios.

How much does Abiomed Impella cost?

The Impella device by Abiomed typically costs between $20,000 and $30,000 per unit, depending on the model and healthcare provider agreements. The total cost may also include implantation procedures, hospital charges, and associated care, which can vary widely. Pricing is generally determined by hospitals and insurance coverage, not directly by the manufacturer.

What is Impella RP used for?

The Impella RP is a percutaneous ventricular assist device used to provide temporary right heart support in patients with severe right ventricular failure, often during high-risk cardiac procedures or in cases of cardiogenic shock. It helps maintain blood flow by actively pumping blood from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery, supporting cardiac function. Proper training and certification are required for healthcare professionals to operate the device safely.

What is an Impella job?

An Impella job typically involves working with the Impella heart pump, a mechanical circulatory support device used for patients with severe heart conditions. Professionals in this field, such as clinical specialists, biomedical engineers, or sales representatives, provide technical support, education, and training to healthcare providers. They may work in hospitals or directly with medical teams to ensure proper use and patient safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Impella position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Impella specialist—a clinical professional who manages and operates Impella cardiac assist devices—you need a strong background in cardiovascular care, typically as a registered nurse, cardiac technologist, or perfusionist, with additional specialized Impella training. Familiarity with hemodynamic monitoring systems, device consoles, and certification from programs such as Abiomed Impella training is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure are critical soft skills in this environment. These competencies ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes when providing mechanical circulatory support in acute cardiac care settings.
