Immunogen information
What are Immunogens?
What are some common challenges faced by immunogen researchers when developing new vaccines or therapeutics?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Immunologist, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Immunogen vs Immunologist?
| Aspect | Immunogen | Immunologist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a degree in biology, immunology, or related fields; certifications vary | Requires advanced degrees (MD, PhD) in immunology; board certification often needed |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, research facilities, biotech companies | Hospitals, clinics, research institutions, academic settings |
| Industry Usage | Biotech, pharmaceutical, research and development | Healthcare, clinical practice, research |
Immunogen refers to substances that provoke an immune response, often used in vaccine development. An Immunologist is a medical or research professional specializing in the immune system. While Immunogen is a product or concept, an Immunologist is a person working in the field. Both are related to immunology but serve different roles within the industry.

The successful candidate will conduct structure-based immunogen design, molecular cloning, and production of immunogens, and will evaluate immune responses using a range of biochemical and immunological assays. The role includes working in BSL-2 laboratory environments, performing mammalian cell culture, and supporting small animal studies (e.g., mice and rabbits).
In addition, the position involves mentoring junior laboratory members, contributing to manuscript preparation, and assisting with the development of grant proposals.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in molecular biology, virology, immunology, microbiology, or related fields. Experience in gene cloning and molecular biology, viral vaccine R&D.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with recombinant protein expression in eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems and protein purification
- Experience with immunoassays and virus neutralization assays
- Experience with HIV-1 vaccine research
- Experience with structural analysis of proteins or protein complexes (e.g., X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM)
- Experience with hybridoma generation and monoclonal antibody (mAb) characterization, and laboratory animal handling
