Job description

Summary

The Terminal 5 Ramp Tower Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of all Terminal 5 operations. Coordinators are responsible for managing aircraft movements within the non-movement area, monitoring flight activity, and maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols. This position serves as a key communication link, delivering essential operational and safety information to stakeholders, airport personnel, and governing authorities to keep operations secure and on schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Aircraft Movement Control:

Provide instructions via air-to-ground radio to aircraft within IGC controlled ramp areas, including push instructions, entering instructions, and instructions to an assigned departing point to await further instructions from ORD ATC.

Advise pilots of gate availability, estimated hold times, and updates regarding their gate.

Proactively control all aircraft movements within IGC’s controlled ramp areas to avoid taxi delays.

Ensure all instructions given to pilots are safe, clear, and efficient.

Maintain situational awareness within the ramp areas and airfield to ensure safety and efficiency.

Gate Management & Flow:

Monitor flights via company-provided radar services.

Monitor IGC’s Resource Management System (RMS).

Manually adjust flights within the RMS as necessary.

Coordinate gate changes within the RMS as operationally necessary.

Coordinate assignment changes with airline personnel effectively to minimize operational disruption.

Enforce gate use policies, including international/domestic separation and CBP compliance.

Operational Coordination:

Maintain operational situational awareness (flow, weather, delays, ATC constraints, inoperative equipment) to effectively make operational decisions.

Serve as a central point of contact for activity affecting the non-movement areas assigned to IGC.

Collaborate with the IGC team, FAA, airport duty managers, ground handlers, and airline OCCs to ensure cohesive airfield flow.

Respond to IROPS (Irregular Operations) scenarios, including diversions, medicals, mechanicals, weather, and other scenarios.

Communication & Reporting:

Document all significant ramp events, incidents, and deviations.

Document flight delays and associated impacts.

Record overnight aircraft stays.

Participate in operational briefings and shift turnovers.

Provide timely updates to stakeholders on flow constraints, safety concerns, or delay-causing events.

Provide excellent customer service to stakeholders over the phone and always maintain a professional tone.

Qualifications

Prior experience in ramp tower, airline operations, or ground control coordination strongly preferred.

Ability to provide training and guidance to associates as needed to ensure compliance with company standards and operational efficiency.

Must have strong radio communication skills and working knowledge of FAA phraseology.

Familiarity with common aircraft types, airport ramp procedures, and airline ground operations.

Ability to work in high-stress, high-tempo environments and make decisions quickly.

Must be available for variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must be available for mandatory overtime to ensure 24/7 staffing; IROPS may require additional staffing support.
