What does an IC4 do?

IC4 stands for 'Individual Contributor level 4,' which is a mid-to-senior technical or professional role within many companies, especially in the tech industry. An IC4 is typically responsible for complex tasks, demonstrating expertise in their field without direct people management responsibilities. They contribute significantly to projects, mentor junior colleagues, and often lead technical initiatives. The exact responsibilities can vary by company and department.

How does an IC4 typically collaborate with cross-functional teams within an organization?

As an IC4, you will often work closely with professionals from product management, design, quality assurance, and operations to drive projects forward. Collaboration usually involves participating in planning sessions, offering technical guidance, and ensuring that deliverables align with business objectives. You'll also be expected to communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, helping to bridge gaps between different teams. This cross-functional interaction not only enriches your daily work but also provides valuable exposure to various aspects of the business, fostering professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IC4, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IC4, you need deep expertise in your technical domain, advanced problem-solving abilities, and a proven track record of delivering impactful projects, usually demonstrated through prior experience or relevant degrees. Proficiency with industry-standard tools, platforms, and possibly certifications related to your field (such as cloud platforms, programming languages, or project management systems) is expected. Strong communication, collaboration, and the ability to influence without authority are critical soft skills at this level. These skills and qualities enable IC4s to drive complex initiatives, mentor peers, and contribute significantly to organizational goals.

What is the difference between Ic4 vs Network Technician?

AspectIc4Network Technician
Required CertificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA (sometimes)CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA (often)
Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise networks, field supportOffice settings, client sites, data centers
Industry UsageTelecommunications, IT services, enterprise networksIT support, telecommunications, networking services

Both Ic4 and Network Technician roles require similar certifications like CompTIA Network+ and Cisco CCNA. They often work in data centers, enterprise environments, and client sites. While Ic4 may focus more on installation and maintenance within specific industries, Network Technicians generally handle troubleshooting and network support tasks. The roles are closely aligned, with overlapping skills and work environments, making them comparable in many organizations.

Job description

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is building the next generation of software systems that enable data center operations to scale with the speed, reliability, and efficiency required by modern cloud infrastructure.
We are looking for a **Principal Software Development Engineer (IC4)** to help design, build, and operate software platforms that support Cloud Hardware Support (CHS) as OCI continues to grow. This role focuses on cloud-native systems, operational tooling, workflow automation, analytics, and intelligent user experiences that help teams manage data center work more consistently and efficiently.
As an IC4 engineer, you will operate independently while helping guide the team's technical direction. You will build entire systems and services, drive design across complex features and subsystems, improve engineering and operational practices, and collaborate closely with partner teams across infrastructure, operations, and service engineering. This aligns with the IC4 expectation of independently building systems and services while improving engineering practices, operations, ownership, hiring, and mentoring across a director-level organization.
This role is well suited for an engineer who enjoys solving ambiguous operational problems with scalable software. You will work on platforms that unify task execution, workflow orchestration, inventory and asset interactions, guided procedures, operational analytics, and automation-first experiences for data center support teams. The broader CHS roadmap emphasizes reducing manual, fragmented processes; improving repair throughput and quality; building centralized analytics; and establishing a task-centric repair operator platform as a primary system of work.
Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, ownership of production systems, customer empathy for field and operations users, and the ability to design software that is secure, resilient, observable, and scalable across global environments.
