Job description

Position Title: Special Education Teacher (ICT - NY)

Summary: The role of the ICT teacher is to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs, in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum.  ICT teachers will document student progress, activities and outcomes, address student's specific needs, and  provide a safe and optimal learning environment.  This is a co-teaching position, in which the special education teacher and the general education teacher plan collaboratively and implement the lesson collaboratively supporting all students.

Compensation:  Base Salary-Certified-$73,500, $2,000 Testing Grade, (Adv. Degrees $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate). $200/ year for applicable experience. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Secondary Education Specialization: Childhood Education (1-6) and Students with Disabilities (SWD) Certification
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school-related matters.

Performance Responsibilities: 

The ICT Teacher shall:

  • Pursue the vision and execute the mission of iLearn Schools Inc.
  • Support and promote board and administrative initiatives and decisions.
  • Possess an understanding of the charter school renewal process and assist with the process as needed.
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel and outside agencies associated with the charter school.
  • Maintain professional competence and continuous improvement through professional growth.
  • Adhere to federal statutes and regulations, New Jersey school law, New Jersey Department of Education rules and regulations, iLearn Schools Inc. policies, procedures and contractual obligations.
  • Take immediate action and notify appropriate personnel concerning any evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids.
  • Follow school affirmative action procedures.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the charter school rules and regulations.
  • Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff or students and use discretion when sharing such information within legal confines.
  • Maintain proper phone etiquette and practice discretion when communicating with parents or the community.
  • Issue electronic/paper communications that are written with appropriate language, phrases and punctuation.  Use of slang or text language is not acceptable.
  • Assist in the collection of data for local, county, state or federal reports.
  • Possess and understanding of the school emergency response plan.
  • Attend school sponsored events as requested/contracted.
  • Conduct assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues, and recommending courses of action or corrective procedures to overcome issues and maximize learning.
  • Assist in developing Individual Educational Plans ("IEP") for students.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing student's IEP and behavior management plans.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies, organizations and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed.
  • Coordinate with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
  • Serve as a ready resource to students and parents to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; serve as liaison between home and school.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community.
  • Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, aids and other supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records.
  • Budget class time effectively.
  • Devise written and oral assignments and assessments that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Perform any other duties within the scope of his/her employment and certification that may be assigned.

Terms of Employment: Ten-month employee

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with New York state law and the provisions of the iLearn Schools policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
