How much do hypersonics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for hypersonics in the United States is $90,170.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $72,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in hypersonics?

Professionals in hypersonics typically spend their days designing, modeling, and testing high-speed flight systems, such as missiles or reentry vehicles, using both computational simulations and hands-on laboratory experiments. They collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, materials scientists, and project managers to identify and solve engineering challenges related to thermal protection, aerodynamics, and structural integrity. Regular meetings to discuss project progress, review test results, and plan future development tasks are also common. The role often involves staying up to date with the latest advancements in aerospace technology and ensuring all work meets industry and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Hypersonics position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Hypersonics role, expertise in aerospace engineering, fluid dynamics, and advanced materials—often backed by a relevant engineering degree or higher—is required. Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, simulation tools, and certain government or defense industry certifications (such as ITAR compliance) is typical. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills in this field. These combined abilities are vital for successfully developing and testing high-performance hypersonic systems in a collaborative, precision-oriented environment.

What is a Hypersonics job?

A Hypersonics job involves working on technologies related to vehicles or missiles that travel at speeds of Mach 5 or higher. Professionals in this field focus on areas like aerodynamics, propulsion, materials science, and thermal protection to develop and test high-speed flight systems. These roles exist in aerospace companies, defense contractors, and government agencies, requiring expertise in engineering, physics, and computational modeling.
