What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HVDC Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HVDC Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems, and high-voltage transmission, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation software (such as PSCAD or MATLAB), knowledge of control and protection systems, and industry certifications like PMP or a Professional Engineer license are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are crucial for ensuring the reliable design, operation, and maintenance of HVDC projects that support efficient, large-scale power transmission.

What are some common challenges faced by HVDC engineers when working on large-scale transmission projects?

HVDC engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing complex system integration, and ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards. The technology involves high voltages and specialized equipment, which requires meticulous planning and risk assessment. Additionally, adapting to evolving industry regulations and integrating new technologies into legacy systems can be demanding but offers valuable learning and growth opportunities.

What are HVDC engineers?

HVDC engineers are professionals who specialize in High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology, which is used for the efficient transmission of electricity over long distances. They design, operate, and maintain HVDC systems, including converter stations, transmission lines, and control systems. HVDC engineers play a key role in integrating renewable energy sources and ensuring the reliability and stability of power grids. Their expertise is essential for large-scale energy projects, particularly those spanning vast geographic areas or connecting different power networks.

What is the difference between Hvdc vs Power System Engineer?

AspectHvdcPower System Engineer
Required CredentialsElectrical engineering degree, certifications in HVDC systemsElectrical engineering degree, certifications in power systems
Work EnvironmentHigh-voltage substations, transmission linesPower plants, grid control centers
Industry UsageTransmission of bulk power over long distancesDesign, operation, and maintenance of power systems

Hvdc specialists focus on high-voltage direct current transmission projects, working with specialized equipment and long-distance power transfer. Power System Engineers have a broader role in designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power grids. While both roles require electrical engineering expertise, Hvdc roles are more specialized in high-voltage direct current technology, whereas Power System Engineers work across various power system components.

Job description

A Snapshot of Your Day
The Senior Expert RTDS will use his/her technical background and expertise to develop sophisticated real-time digital simulation models for power system studies, with a specialized focus on HVDC applications and grid integration challenges. Later, he/she will review and validate complex RTDS models that solve specific challenges of modern power systems incorporating high levels of power electronics and converter-based technologies. In between meetings, he/she will present virtually to new clients our RTDS-based simulation capabilities and consulting offerings. Finally, the Senior Expert will review the progress of several RTDS modeling engagements under his/her oversight and check status vs. planned workplan.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Overseeing the development and validation of RTDS models for HVDC systems, grid integration studies, and real-time simulation applications.
  • Supporting the creation of detailed RTDS models for power electronic devices, HVDC converters, renewable generation, and storage integration into AC grids.
  • Leading analyses of electromagnetic transients, converter control interactions, harmonic phenomena, and protection system behavior using advanced RTDS capabilities.
  • Managing RTDS consulting engagements from initiation to completion, coordinating with engineers, modeling specialists, and sub-contractors in diverse environments.
  • Engaging in business development by identifying RTDS market opportunities, developing technical proposals, and building execution teams.
  • Presenting RTDS simulation results and technical findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities while mentoring junior team members in modeling and consulting practices.

What You Bring
  • University degree in electrical power engineering (M.Sc. or Ph.D. preferred)
  • 8 or more years of extensive professional experience in real-time digital simulation and power system modeling, particularly in HVDC applications. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.
  • Expertise in RTDS hardware/software with advanced knowledge of RSCAD modeling, real-time simulation principles, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, and integration with physical hardware for closed-loop applications.
  • Extensive experience in VSC-HVDC systems including converter control, DC grid applications, power system protection, and grid codes, with a proven track record of RTDS-based testing, validation, and successful implementations.
  • Strong understanding of power system dynamics including electromagnetic transients, converter-based technologies, and grid integration challenges, with deep knowledge of real-time simulation requirements for modern power systems.
  • Proven consulting and communication skills demonstrated through successful RTDS projects, business development activities, and the ability to clearly convey complex technical concepts and strategies while managing client relationships.
Travel, as needed (~10%).
