Position Summary:.

The HV/MV Technician is responsible for performing preventative and corrective maintenance on substation, medium-voltage collection, and high-voltage equipment up to 500kV in support of utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage (BESS) facilities nationwide. This role requires strong technical expertise in HV/MV systems, disciplined adherence to safety standards, and the ability to execute switching, troubleshooting, and diagnostic activities in energized environments.

The HV/MV Technician supports safe, reliable plant operations by executing switching procedures, conducting advanced electrical testing, supporting outage response, and ensuring compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, IEEE, NERC (as applicable), and utility-specific standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete CMMS work orders accurately and on time.

· Submit detailed service reports after corrective and preventative maintenance activities.

· Support warranty documentation and vendor coordination.

· Maintain accurate switching logs and test reports.

  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on substation equipment up to 500kV, including:
    • Circuit breakers (vacuum, SF6, oil)
    • Switches and disconnects
    • CTs and PTs
    • Transformers and LTCs
    • Capacitor banks and reactors
    • Surge arresters
    • Bus systems and grounding grids
  • Perform maintenance on MV collection systems (15kV–35kV), including:
    • Dead-break elbows and terminations
    • Cable splices
    • Junction boxes and switchgear
  • Execute approved HV/MV switching procedures in coordination with system operators and utilities.
  • Install and remove protective grounds.
  • Support transformer oil sampling and diagnostic review (DGA coordination).
  • Assist with cable fault locating, insulation resistance testing (megger), and VLF testing.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • 2–5 years of relevant HV/MV field experience (500kV and below).
  • Strong technical background in substation maintenance and MV collection systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret one-lines, schematics, and relay drawings.
  • Experience executing switching procedures under formal switching authority.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and compliance standards.
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
  • NETA Certification.
  • Protection and Controls experience.
  • Experience in utility-scale solar or BESS environments.
  • Completion of substation maintenance training programs.
  • Experience with remote diagnostics and SCADA-supported troubleshooting.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Demonstrated HV/MV switching authority.
  • Experience supporting renewable energy assets (solar/BESS).
  • Experience with relay event review and protection troubleshooting.
  • Field experience responding to forced outages.
  • Advanced electrical testing experience (NETA-level preferred).

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow, wind).
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, and bend for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working at heights, around energized equipment, and in confined spaces as required.
  • Manual dexterity to handle tools, instruments, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, FR clothing, and fall protection gear.
  • Must have the stamina to work extended shifts, weekends, or travel as projects require.

Work Environment

  • Field-based role with regular travel to customer sites nationwide.
  • Exposure to high-voltage equipment, electrical hazards, and heavy machinery (strict adherence to safety standards required).
  • Work performed both indoors (substations, control rooms) and outdoors (construction or operational sites).
  • Collaborative team environment with direct interaction with customers, engineers, and field staff.
  • May involve irregular schedules and on-call availability to support urgent field service needs.

COMPENSATION: $44-$50 / hr
