Human Computer Interaction Internship information

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Human Computer Interaction Internship?

As a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve user research, prototyping, usability testing, and interface design. Interns often collaborate closely with UX designers, software engineers, and product managers to improve the user experience of digital products. Typical tasks might include conducting user interviews, analyzing user data, designing wireframes, or testing interactive prototypes. The work environment is usually collaborative and iterative, with regular feedback and opportunities to contribute creative ideas.

What is a Human Computer Interaction Internship?

A Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Internship is a temporary training position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience working on projects that explore how people interact with computers and technology. Interns typically assist with user research, usability testing, prototyping, and interface design. The internship provides hands-on learning in areas like user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and human-centered computing, often in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. It is an opportunity to apply academic concepts to real-world problems and develop skills valued in technology and design industries.

What is the difference between Human Computer Interaction Internship vs User Experience Design Internship?

Both internships focus on improving user interactions with technology but differ in emphasis. Human Computer Interaction internships lean toward research, usability testing, and understanding human factors, while User Experience Design internships focus on designing user interfaces and enhancing overall user satisfaction. Candidates should choose based on their interest in research versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in user experience (UX) design, usability principles, and human-centered research, often supported by coursework or a degree in HCI, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with prototyping tools (such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD), usability testing platforms, and analytics software is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help interns contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams and adapt to user feedback. These abilities are crucial for creating intuitive, user-focused digital experiences and supporting product development with actionable insights.

Job Description Everforth ECS is seeking a Junior UX Designer to work in the National Capital Region covering the Pentagon, Falls Church, and Fairfax . Please Note: This position is contingent upon contract award. The War Data Platform (WDP) is a key initiative within the U.S. Department of War's (DoW) AI-First strategy introduced in early 2026. The WDP separates business and financial data from operational warfighting data, aiming to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) on the battlefield. The WDP extends to Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret environments, and supports collaboration between Combatant Commands, Joint Staff directorates, Senior Executive Service leaders, and operational analysts. • The Junior UX Designer supports user interface design and experience development across WDP's multi-classification environments under the guidance of senior UX staff, contributing to the human-centered design of mission-critical dashboards, analytical tools, and operational interfaces serving warfighters, analysts, and senior DoW decision-makers. This is an entry-level role offering meaningful hands-on experience designing for enterprise-scale government platforms where usability directly impacts mission effectiveness.
• Supports design and enhancement of user interface components for the War Data Platform (WDP) Core Integration Platform across Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret environments serving Combatant Commands, Joint Staff, SES leaders, and analysts.
• Assists in developing wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes using Figma and Adobe XD to translate mission workflows into clear, user-friendly designs.
• Assists senior UX staff in the execution of user research initiatives and development of research artifacts, such as research reports, journey maps and use case summaries. • Contributes to enterprise design systems and component libraries aligned with WDP visual standards and platform engineering constraints.
• Participates in design reviews, gathers stakeholder feedback, and refines layouts to improve usability, navigation clarity, and data visualization effectiveness for dashboards and mission applications.
• Collaborates with software engineers and front-end developers during Agile sprints to support implementation of UI specifications, interaction flows, and style guidelines while adhering to Section 508 and DoW UX standards.
• Supports user testing by preparing prototype materials, documenting feedback, and recommending iterative improvements.
• Develops basic UI documentation, workflow diagrams, and interface mappings to assist multi-enclave deployment efforts.
• Contributes to improvements in task flow efficiency, usability consistency, and adoption of WDP Core Integration capabilities across supported environments.
• Performs other duties as assigned. Required Skills • Current Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
• 0-3 years of experience in UX design, user interface design, human-computer interaction, or a closely related discipline, including relevant academic, internship, portfolio, or lab-based experience.
• Familiarity with key UX deliverables (e.g., user journey maps, research plans, empathy maps, service blueprints, stakeholder maps, user flows, storyboards, interaction models, wireframes and prototypes for complex systems, testing plans, etc.) and how they are used.
• Demonstrated portfolio that showcases the candidate's UX design experience • Foundational proficiency with UX design and prototyping tools such as Figma or Adobe XD, with demonstrated ability to produce wireframes, mockups, or interactive prototypes for web-based or data-intensive applications. Desired Skills • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) eligibility.
• Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards and a working awareness of federal or DoW UX compliance requirements as applied to government-facing application design.
• Exposure to Agile development methodologies, including basic understanding of how UX design activities integrate within sprint cycles alongside software engineering and front-end development teams.
• Experience contributing to or maintaining design systems, component libraries, or style guides in support of consistent, scalable user interface development across multi-platform environments.
• Demonstrated interest in data visualization design principles, including layout and presentation approaches for operational dashboards, analytics interfaces, or mission reporting tools serving diverse user populations.
