Human Computer Interaction Internship information

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a human computer interaction internship?

As a Human Computer Interaction (HCI) intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve user research, prototyping, usability testing, and interface design. Interns often collaborate closely with UX designers, software engineers, and product managers to improve the user experience of digital products. Typical tasks might include conducting user interviews, analyzing user data, designing wireframes, or testing interactive prototypes. The work environment is usually collaborative and iterative, with regular feedback and opportunities to contribute creative ideas.

What is a human computer interaction internship?

A Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Internship is a temporary training position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience working on projects that explore how people interact with computers and technology. Interns typically assist with user research, usability testing, prototyping, and interface design. The internship provides hands-on learning in areas like user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, and human-centered computing, often in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. It is an opportunity to apply academic concepts to real-world problems and develop skills valued in technology and design industries.

What is the difference between Human Computer Interaction Internship vs User Experience Design Internship?

AspectHuman Computer Interaction InternshipUser Experience Design Internship
Required CredentialsRelevant coursework in HCI, psychology, computer scienceDesign, psychology, human factors background
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, academiaDesign agencies, tech firms, startups
Industry UsageAcademic research, product development, usability testingProduct design, interface development, user research
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding HCI roles, research opportunitiesDesign projects, user-centered design roles

Both internships focus on improving user interactions with technology but differ in emphasis. Human Computer Interaction internships lean toward research, usability testing, and understanding human factors, while User Experience Design internships focus on designing user interfaces and enhancing overall user satisfaction. Candidates should choose based on their interest in research versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human computer interaction intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Human Computer Interaction Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in user experience (UX) design, usability principles, and human-centered research, often supported by coursework or a degree in HCI, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with prototyping tools (such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD), usability testing platforms, and analytics software is typically required. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help interns contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams and adapt to user feedback. These abilities are crucial for creating intuitive, user-focused digital experiences and supporting product development with actionable insights.

Job description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies, behaviors, and daily lives.
WHOOP is hiring a User Experience Researcher II to join WHOOP Labs in Boston. In this role, you will conduct research that helps shape the future of WHOOP products and member experiences across hardware, software, machine learning, and emerging technologies. Working closely with Product, Design, Machine Learning Research, and Hardware teams, you will uncover insights that inform product decisions and advance WHOOP's mission to unlock human performance and healthspan.
We are looking for a curious, adaptable researcher who thrives in diverse problem spaces and enjoys learning new methods, tools, and approaches. You will support a wide range of initiatives, from foundational product experiences to exploratory research that informs future innovations. This role is ideal for someone who is energized by methodological rigor, excited to experiment responsibly with new research approaches, and motivated to help strengthen the foundation of research practice across WHOOP.
This role is expected to work in-person from WHOOP HQ in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Execute end-to-end user research projects across the product development lifecycle, from study planning and participant engagement through analysis, synthesis, and reporting.
  • Select and apply appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methods to answer product and business questions, including interviews, usability studies, surveys, diary studies, concept evaluations, and field research.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Machine Learning Research, Hardware, and other cross-functional stakeholders to align on research objectives and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Synthesize research findings into clear insights and actionable recommendations that inform product development and member experience improvements.
  • Lead sequential research projects while maintaining high-quality execution, clear communication, and stakeholder alignment.
  • Explore and evaluate emerging research methods, tools, and AI-enabled workflows, helping expand the team's methodological toolkit and improve research effectiveness while maintaining research rigor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in User Experience Research, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, Sociology, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience conducting user research in product, technology, healthcare, or other customer-focused environments.
  • Experience independently conducting mixed methods research studies, including study design, moderation, analysis, and synthesis.
  • Strong communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to translate research findings into actionable insights for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
Demonstrated ability to build productive relationships and collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience using data and evidence to inform decisions, challenge assumptions, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Passion for health, human performance, behavior change, and WHOOP's mission to unlock human performance and healthspan.
  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.

This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.
Interested in the role, but don't meet every qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience. As we continue to build a diverse and inclusive environment, we encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply.
WHOOP is an Equal Opportunity Employer and participates in E-verify to determine employment eligibility
The WHOOP compensation philosophy is designed to attract, motivate, and retain exceptional talent by offering competitive base salaries, meaningful equity, and consistent pay practices that reflect our mission and core values.
At WHOOP, we view total compensation as the combination of base salary, equity, and benefits, with equity serving as a key differentiator that aligns our employees with the long-term success of the company and allows every member of our corporate team to own part of WHOOP and share in the company's long-term growth and success.
The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $75,000 - $95,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.
In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.
These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate's specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role's requirements.
