What is a HUBZone internship?

A HUBZone internship is a work-based learning opportunity offered by companies that participate in the Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone) program, which is managed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. These internships are typically designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in a field relevant to their studies while supporting businesses located in economically disadvantaged areas. The goal of a HUBZone internship is to provide professional development for interns while contributing to the growth and competitiveness of HUBZone-certified businesses.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a HUBZone internship?

During a HUBZone internship, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that support federal contracting, community development, and small business operations within designated HUBZone areas. Typical tasks may include assisting with grant writing, researching government contracting opportunities, supporting outreach initiatives, and collaborating with different departments to help fulfill compliance and reporting requirements. Interns often gain hands-on experience in project management, data analysis, and client communications, all within a supportive team environment that encourages learning and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a HUBZone intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a HUBZone Intern, you generally need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work with basic office software, often supported by current enrollment in an accredited academic program and HUBZone residency eligibility. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, data entry systems, and sometimes customer relationship management (CRM) tools is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn set outstanding interns apart in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for efficiently supporting business operations and maximizing the impact of HUBZone program initiatives.

About the Internship
Advantech GS Enterprises, Inc. is seeking motivated college students and early-career professionals for a paid, part-time internship opportunity supporting our federal contracting operations.
This internship is designed to provide students with practical work experience while allowing them to balance their academic commitments. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals and gain exposure to areas such as Talent Acquisition, Human Resources, Business Operations, Finance, Project Management, Contracts, IT, Cybersecurity, and Federal Programs.

  • Supporting day-to-day business and administrative operations
  • Assisting with recruiting, sourcing, and talent acquisition activities
  • Supporting proposal and contract-related activities
  • Conducting research and preparing reports and presentations

  • Supporting employee and client communications
  • Participating in team meetings and professional development activities
  • Performing other duties aligned with the intern's academic background and career interests

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional, dependable, organized, and eager to learn
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
What You'll Gain
  • Hands-on experience within a federal government contracting environment
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • Exposure to federal programs and professional services
  • Professional development and networking opportunities
  • Opportunities to develop business, technical, and communication skills
  • Potential consideration for future full-time employment based on performance, business needs, and available opportunities
Our Goal
At Advantech, we believe internships should provide meaningful experience—not simply administrative tasks. Our goal is to help students develop professional skills, build confidence, and gain firsthand exposure to the federal contracting industry while completing their education.
This is a part-time internship designed to provide flexibility for students while giving them meaningful professional experience.
