Job description

TITLE: Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing

Job Summary: The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) provides care to assigned residents in a caring, safe and efficient manner; and is responsible to perform the following according to Heartland Senior Living (HSL) mission and standards, procedures and individualized resident care plans; supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility, and as may be required by the Director of Nursing Services to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

Qualifications: The Assistant Director of Nursing must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota and must keep up with CEU's for license renewal. He/She must have a knowledge of MDS processes, Infection Control and Wound Care. The ADON demonstrates understanding and realizing the importance of each staff person in the HSL team and understands the importance of being a good team player. The ADON must have experience in geriatric nursing, rehab, safety, critical thinking skills & team management. The Assistant Director of Nursing is also required to have an ability to read, write and speak English, and complete and pass a state required background study form which checks for certain criminal convictions or serious/recurring maltreatment.

General Responsibilities:

Direct the day-to-day functions of the unlicensed nursing staff in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.

Ensure that all nursing personnel comply with written policies established by this facility.

Periodically review the department's policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, etc. Make recommendations for revisions to Director of Nursing

Participate in facility surveys made by authorized government agencies as may be requested.

Assist in admitting, transferring, and discharging resident's as required.

Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.

Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.

Case management duties.

Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to ensure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.

Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the day.

Reviewing complaints and grievances made or filed by nursing personnel.

Make appropriate reports to the Director of Nursing as required or as may be necessary. Follow facilities established procedures.

Review with IDT and recommend appropriateness of potential admissions

Provide nursing leadership to nursing personnel.

Review and assist in staffing needs when assigned personnel fail to report to work, as necessary.

Represents HSL to other organizations as an organization that is committed to deliver care in the spirit of excellence. Be especially conscious and careful of this when serving on community committees, boards, and in general friendships.

Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.

Monitor nursing care to ensure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect.

Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy and that nursing service personnel knock before entering the resident's room.

Ensure that all nursing service personnel are knowledgeable of the resident's responsibilities and rights including the right to refuse treatment.

Review complaints and grievances made by the resident and make a written/ oral report to the Director of Nursing indicating what action(s) were taken to resolve the complaint or grievance. Follow the facilities established procedures.

Report and investigate all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.

Serves as the primary backup for the Director of Nursing Services position.

Demonstrates/encourages opportunities for carrying out mission.

Assists with recruiting, hiring, and staffing work area at appropriate levels.

Acquires resources and means that promote a quality work environment; ensures quality performance and conformance with regulation and laws.

Assists and participates in the QA/QI process.

Keeps on top of and implements new programs or best practices.

Accepts accountability for activities under direct control; plans and organizes work with and for department.

Communicates to Director of Nursing any/all education / re-education of nursing staff persons.

Exercises sound judgment and decision making.

Responds appropriately to emergency needs in the facility (choking, falls, convulsions, fire and disaster situations, etc.)

Demonstrates safe use of oxygen, lifts and all equipment; utilizes good body mechanics during all transfers and physical tasks.

Notifies maintenance and other appropriate staff of problems.

Will participate on committees as necessary.
