Job description

Human Resources Generalist

At Toole Design, we're leading the way in creating safer, more connected communities through sustainable multimodal transportation design. We're looking for a Human Resources Generalist with a strong background in ERISA-governed benefits to join our team. We're looking for someone who excels at explaining complex benefits in plain language, cares deeply about equity, and has a firm understanding of the relationship between total compensation and performance. The right candidate for this role will excel at coaching and supporting staff and managers, have a collaborative, people-first approach, and be able to serve as both an advocate for employees and the voice of the company. We are a mission-based company that's focused on making transportation more equitable, safe, and accessible, because we know that when people can move freely about their cities, they can live fuller lives. This is an opportunity to support this work from behind the scenes by bringing operational excellence that helps our mission and values come to life.

Why You'll Love Working Here

We're a purpose-driven team of technical experts and operations professionals who believe streets should work for everyone. At Toole Design, you'll join a collaborative environment where operations professionals work alongside industry leaders, with mentorship and development opportunities designed to help you grow your expertise.

We offer:

  • A collaborative, inclusive culture that supports your growth and advancement
  • A flexible hybrid schedule: 3 days in the office and 2 days remotely
  • 8 paid holidays; and at least 16 days of PTO accrued annually
  • Competitive salary, excellent benefits, and transportation perks: Benefits and Support
  • The opportunity to support projects that improve lives-advancing safe, inclusive design grounded in ethics, empathy, and equity

What You'll Do

You will partner with the Director of People and Culture, coordinating with our Accounting leadership, and external advisors to advise and support leadership and staff, specializing in benefits governed by ERISA. Your role will include communications strategies and support to staff, reporting, and overseeing compliance. You will lead audits, ensuring accurate reporting and strong documentation and support. You will serve as a trusted partner and leader in the firm for benefits-related needs.

You'll also support staff, serving as a trusted partner on the People & Culture team, advising on policies and approaches that support the mission of the organization and the needs of the team. This will involve advising staff, creating and co-leading trainings, and coaching team members as a senior member of a People & Culture (HR) team that puts staff needs first.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, organizational development, human resources, economics, accounting, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • 8+ years of Human Resources experience, including at least 4 years working with ERISA-governed benefits and retirement plans
  • Strong knowledge of qualified retirement plans and ERISA laws, with hands-on experience managing compliance testing and reporting processes such as Form 5500, ADP/ACP, and 409(p)
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor staff while collaborating across teams to develop strategies and creative solutions
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills, with exceptional attention to detail
  • HR certification required (SHRM-CP/SCP or PHR/SPHR); retirement plan certifications such as CPSP, QKA, or QPA preferred

Join Us. Make an Impact. We're proud to be an ENR Top 500 design firm with one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry. If you're ready to do meaningful work with a supportive, talented team-apply today.

We are targeting a salary range of $93,500.00 to $104,500.00 for this position. Exceptionally qualified candidates may qualify for more.
