Program Overview  

Insight Housing’s Meals Program includes the longest running free, weekday Community Meal Program in the City of Berkeley along with meals provided in our men & women’s shelters, the GPD Veterans Transitional Housing Program, Berkeley Respite and the Albany House.  

Position Summary  

The Meals Program Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Insight Housing Meals Program. They will oversee the preparation and distribution of daily meals to clients and operate a clean and safe kitchen, in compliance with all health and safety department standards. The Program Manager will also be responsible for the recruitment and training of all Meals Program staff and for the Community Meal oversight and training of volunteers during the meal service.  The Meals Program Manager will also be responsible for extensive tracking and reporting to include  maintenance of the Community Meals Sign-up Tracker; the monthly Alameda County Community Meals report and the entire meal count tracking process. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Meals program. 
  • In collaboration with the Director of Programs and Dwight Way Shelter Program Manager, hire, onboard, train, supervise, evaluate, and terminate as necessary for all Meals Program staff. 
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of nutritious meals daily for all BFHP programs utilizing a 4-week menu rotation 
  • Plan the menu for daily meals ensuring the meals are nutritious. Develop menus for special agency and community events (Holidays, Board and Agency events) 
  • Coordinate the ordering and delivery of food and supplies and proper storage based on the 4-week menu. 
  • Coordinate daily delivery of food to all meal sites and as needed. 
  • Secure food from the Alameda County Food Bank and collect food donations from other local entities. 
  • Drive agency vehicles to deliver meals to various agency sites as needed. 
  • Ensure proper safety and sanitation in food preparation and service areas, in compliance with local, state and federal health and safety regulations. 
  • Manage the maintenance of kitchen equipment. Coordinate with Operations Manager as needed. 
  • Manage the Meals Program annual budget in collaboration with the Director of Programs. 
  • Maintain meal stats and provide monthly reports to supervisors and finance teams as assigned. 
  • Conduct food safety training for all agency staff. 
  • Train and supervise volunteers during community events. 
  • Establish and maintain a welcoming and hospitable climate for patrons of the meal. 
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all volunteer groups. 
  • Attend and participate in all meetings and trainings as assigned. 
  • Facilitate a weekly Food Service All Staff Meeting. 
  • Provide bi-weekly check-in meetings with each food service staff. 
  • Track staff absences and approve staff timesheets in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Facilitate a quarterly Client Food Service Survey to gain input from residents on meal preferences and recommendations. 
  • Work within the framework of BFHP’s Code of Conduct. 
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the supervisor. 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities 

  • High school or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. 
  • 3-5 years’ supervisory experience in kitchens cooking for large groups in an institutional setting. 
  • Commitment to serving homeless individuals. Prior experience working with Veterans, homeless and low-income individuals strongly preferred. 
  • Knowledge of food safety procedures and ability to train others on Food Safety. 
  • Must have and maintain valid SERV Safe Certification. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, internet, and calendar applications. 
  • Organizational skills; strong Excel skills to create and maintain meals trackers. 
  • Strong community networking skills and ability to build resources and relationships that improve continuity of care. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and crisis intervention skills with a can-do and flexible attitude. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, multitask, maintain confidentiality, and meet deadlines. 
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct, attitude, and appearance at all times. 

Special Requirements 

  •  This position requires frequent driving. A valid California driver license, reliable personal vehicle, current personal auto insurance as required by law, and a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) sufficient to obtain and reasonably maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies. 
  • Must be able to receive and maintain criminal records clearance. 
  • Must be able to clear tuberculosis screening (TB)
  • Credit Check as permitted by law

Physical Requirements 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms.  Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, talk, hear, and see clearly.  May be occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.  May be required to lift or move up to 50 lbs.
