Prairie State College seeks an experienced part-time hourly laboratory assistant to assist with the provision of customized training to a variety of clients. Successful candidates will have a desire to engage a diverse student population in various levels of millwright/maintenance studies. Lab assistant duties include running and monitoring the millwright/machine tool/and welding lab and assisting students in any task/machine usage. Must be able to work independently, show good judgment, and have the desire to engage a student population in various levels of welding principles and techniques. Successful candidates will have a flexible schedule for teaching assignments. 
Instruction topics include but are not limited to:
  • Print Reading
  • Measurements
  • Threads, Fasteners and Tooling
  • Grinding
  • Drilling and Work Holding
  • Milling
  • Lathes
Reporting Relationship
Direct reporting relationship to the Manager, Workforce and Community Partnerships - Workforce Trades. Supports the Executive Director, Workforce Development and Community Education, and team with carrying out the mission of the college and department.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Understand instructional activities supporting curriculum. 
  • Use appropriate assessment tools to ensure learning. 
  • Effective communication with students to help them achieve their educational goals.
  • Opening and closing the welding lab in a safe and secure manner.
  • Conducting classes with little or no direct supervision.
  • Providing student updates when requested.

Other Duties and Responsibilities Minimum Qualifications
  1. Experience with machining / Computer Numerical Controls (CNC) operations.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  3. Instructional/Training experience.
Must be proficient in machining. A competency test will be administered as part of the interview process

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Associate degree in machining technology or associated field
  2. Experience teaching, especially at the community college level.
  3. Experience working with a culturally and intellectually diverse group.
Ability to create diverse teaching methods
