Job description

Job Title: Systems Integration & Test Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on supporting the development, testing, and deployment of a next-generation integrated rail operations platform. It is ideal for an early-career engineer who wants immediate exposure to real-world projects and a solid foundation in systems engineering, verification and validation (V&V), application testing, and technical documentation. You will start by executing tests, following detailed procedures, documenting results, troubleshooting issues, and preparing reports in both lab and project environments. As you gain domain knowledge and confidence, you will expand into application engineering, deployment, configuration, and test/commissioning activities for customer-specific implementations. The position suits someone who is curious, adaptable, collaborative, and eager to learn in a team-oriented environment, with strong communication skills, disciplined documentation habits, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Support the testing, integration, and deployment of control center and rail operations software applications.
  • Execute verification and validation (V&V) activities in accordance with defined test procedures, engineering standards, and project requirements.
  • Follow structured test steps, document results clearly, and generate accurate test reports and supporting deliverables.
  • Assist with troubleshooting system, application, and integration issues in both lab and project environments.
  • Support the development, validation, and maintenance of application configurations and system parameters tailored to customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers across software, systems, network, telecom, and application teams to help ensure successful project execution.
  • Analyze requirements, specifications, and engineering documentation to understand expected system behavior and verify performance.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and defect tracking, helping identify, document, and communicate issues early in the lifecycle.
  • Maintain project documentation, interface information, test records, and technical artifacts throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Identify and propose opportunities to improve test efficiency, automation, reporting, and repeatability.
  • Progress over time into a broader role supporting deployment, configuration, commissioning, and customer-specific application engineering.
  • Learn the product, system architecture, and engineering workflow to build a strong understanding of the platform.
  • Support formal test execution and reporting for lab and project activities.
  • Validate system functionality in a lab environment and confirm that behavior aligns with requirements and specifications.
  • Assist with configuration changes and verify that updates produce the expected system behavior.
  • Troubleshoot communication or integration issues across software and hardware interfaces.
  • Contribute to improved test processes, automation initiatives, and documentation quality.
  • Build readiness for deployment and commissioning support by gradually taking on broader systems integration responsibilities.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or another related technical field.
  • 0–3 years of experience in engineering, systems, software, test, validation, integration, or a related technical environment, or strong internship, co-op, or academic project experience aligned to systems engineering or testing.
  • Understanding of the systems engineering V-model, including how requirements, integration, testing, and V&V fit across the lifecycle.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures, execute tests methodically, and document results with a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to raise issues early and contribute ideas for improvement.
  • Comfort working with engineering documentation such as requirements, test procedures, interface definitions, schematics, or architecture diagrams.
  • Basic troubleshooting skills across software, system, and integration environments.
  • Willingness to learn, remain flexible, and contribute across multiple projects and engineering activities.
  • Comfort working in a collaborative environment where engineers coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Experience or exposure to test engineering, including software testing, validation, test procedures, test plans, and test development.
  • Familiarity with requirements-based testing, system integration, or V&V through school, internships, or industry experience.
  • Familiarity with technical documentation and formal engineering processes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with teammates and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Exposure to Python for scripting or test automation in a software test engineering context.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience or exposure to SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial or control system communications such as Modbus, TCP/IP, or serial communication.
  • Experience troubleshooting networked systems, client/server communication, or PC-level connectivity issues.
  • Experience using tools such as Wireshark, GDB, or other debugging and diagnostic tools.
  • Scripting or automation experience using Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Basic Windows and/or Linux system administration skills.
  • Exposure to virtual machines, server builds, or virtualization concepts.
  • Understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with PLC communication, signal monitoring, or control system data flows.
  • Experience in application engineering, system integration, or deployment support in a lab or customer environment.
  • Experience in rail, transportation, industrial automation, or another safety-critical industry.
  • Interest in growing into application configuration, customer-specific system setup, deployment support, test and commissioning activities, and broader systems integration responsibilities.

Work Environment

The role follows a Monday–Friday work schedule, with an expectation to work onsite during the initial ramp-up period to build product knowledge, understand the system architecture, and integrate into the engineering workflow. Once fully trained, hybrid flexibility is available, allowing a mix of onsite and remote work as appropriate for project needs. You will work in a collaborative, team-oriented engineering environment where engineers actively coach and mentor junior team members. Much of the work takes place in lab environments and project settings that involve control center and rail operations software, networked systems, and integration with hardware interfaces. The culture emphasizes continuous learning, disciplined documentation, adherence to formal engineering processes, and ongoing improvement of test efficiency, automation, and quality.
