Job description

CVP is seeking an MRI Technologist to join our team in providing our Nation's Veterans with diagnostic imaging services at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System (Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center), located at 5901 E. 7th Street, Long Beach, CA 90822. This is a full-time, on-site position.

Work schedules include weekday and weekend coverage (including holidays), with shift options including Day shifts from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm and 8:00 am to 6:30 pm, Evening shifts from 12:00 pm to 10:30 pm, Night shifts from 10:15 pm to 6:45 am, and Weekend shifts from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm. Previous VA experience is preferred.


  • Independently operate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment to perform a variety of complex MRI imaging exams, practicing MRI safety at all times in accordance with established national standards and VALBHS policies and procedures.
  • Operate super conductive MRI equipment - a highly complex computerized imaging device utilizing strong magnetic fields and radio waves - to acquire images of the entire body, including the brain, neck, spine, chest, body, and extremities.
  • Receive patients, explain the method of procedure(s), position patients appropriately, select and set technical parameters, and set up and adjust accessory equipment for imaging.
  • Set up MRI suites, ensuring that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and all other required equipment and supplies are present and available prior to examinations.
  • Prepare and administer contrast material intravenously under close supervision of radiologist(s); contrast is not to be administered independently.
  • Perform related clerical duties including sending images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), archiving images, post-processing images, and case editing of computer requests and reports.
  • Maintain records and enter patient information using the Radiology VistA Package and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
  • Contribute to patient assessments and determine priorities using independent judgment, organizational skills, and an interdisciplinary approach to the provision of care.
  • Comply with all applicable VALBHS written policies, procedures, bylaws, and medical staff protocols; do not introduce new procedures or services without prior approval from the VALBHS Chief of Staff or Medical Director.
  • Report any unusual incidents within 24 hours to the Administrative Officer of the Day (AOD) of the VALBHS Radiology Department; report all accidents, malfunctions, injuries, and deaths immediately and verbally to the COR.
  • Maintain patient sensitivity and respect the basic rights and dignity of all patients.

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust government security clearance; US Citizenship is required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of current work experience on MRI equipment similar to VALBHS MRI scanners (1.5T or 3.0T GE MRI scanner); OR minimum of one (1) year of current work experience in MRI modality if GE MRI scanner experience is not held.
  • Must hold a current, valid American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification in Radiography ARRT (R) AND Advanced ARRT certification in MRI (MR).
  • Demonstrated experience starting Intravenous (IV) lines and administering contrast injections; IV certification is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS); AGFA PACS experience is preferred but not required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agencies recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, VA health information systems, and electronic medical records; training will be provided on VA-specific systems upon appointment.
  • Strong communication skills and English language fluency.
