About Us
The New York City Council's Animal Welfare Caucus is dedicated to protecting and advocating for the humane treatment of all animals in New York City - wild and domestic. The Caucus, through advancing legislation, shaping public policy and fighting for budget allocations, works to create a more compassionate New York City for all the animals that call this city home. The Caucus is composed of 19 of the 51 members of the City Council.
About the Position
The Animal Welfare Caucus seeks a Legislative & Organizing Intern with strong research and writing skills. The intern will play a key role in organizing and outreach, including coordinating with members and staff for meetings and decision-making processes, and supporting the planning and execution of advocate-led briefings and advocate roundtables. Responsibilities may be tailored to the selected candidate's interests and skills. The intern will additionally provide general administrative support to the Executive Director and work closely with Caucus leadership.
About the Candidate
We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with a strong interest in progressive politics, public service, and city government. This internship offers hands-on experience in legislative research, policy development, and political organizing, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with Council Members, staff, and advocacy partners to advance the policy priorities of the Caucus
SALARY RANGE:
Hourly rate of $32.05
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and analysis of City budget documents, legislation, and policy reports in support of the Caucus's legislative and budget priorities.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Council Members' offices on shared initiatives.
  • Assist in planning hearings, briefings, advocacy events, and Caucus meetings, including developing materials such as lines-of-questioning and run-of-show documents.
  • Maintain internal tracking systems, including legislative tracking, policy and budget analyses, and stakeholder engagement records.
  • Engage with external stakeholders and advocacy partners in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • Support communications efforts as needed, including drafting social media content, creating graphics and videos, and updating the Caucus website.

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent organizational and analytical abilities.
  • Availability to work 14-20 hours per week in a hybrid work environment.

New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
