Location:
Hale County Hospital; 508 Greene Street, Greensboro AL 36744
Classification:
PRN (as needed), meaning work hours are scheduled based on the facility's needs. PRN staff members normally fill in for regular employees during absences, high census periods, or special projects. Must be willing to work shifts on weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Shift Times:
6:45PM-7:15AM; 12-Hour Shifts

SUMMARY
The Security Guard is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, staff, and hospital property. This position assists employees in maintaining a safe, secure, and peaceful environment throughout the facility and may be trained to provide additional support by performing patient registration duties during night shifts when registration staff are not on site.
In addition to security responsibilities, the Security Guard may be required to assist patients with mobility limitations, including escorting, lifting, transporting, or otherwise assisting patients entering or exiting the Emergency Department when requested by nursing staff or when nursing personnel are unavailable to provide assistance.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Security Duties
  • Lock all hospital entrances upon arrival and secure the building according to established schedules.
  • Check doors, windows, and restricted areas hourly, or more frequently if needed.
  • Open and relock doors for authorized personnel as required.
  • Maintain an orderly flow of traffic in and around the Emergency Department (limited to one visitor per room unless otherwise directed by nursing staff).
  • Conduct regular rounds of the hospital, parking lots, and surrounding grounds to ensure safety and security.
  • Remain visible and accessible at all times while on duty.
  • Respond promptly to disturbances, safety concerns, emergencies, or security incidents.
  • Notify local law enforcement when necessary and assist with incident coordination.
  • Assist with transporting patients being admitted or discharged.
  • Assist patients who require help entering or exiting the Emergency Department, including those with mobility issues, difficulty walking, or requiring physical support.
  • Assist nursing staff with lifting, escorting, transporting, or otherwise assisting patients when requested and within the scope of hospital policy.
  • Assist in controlling crowd situations in or around the Emergency Department.
  • Strictly prohibited from carrying or using weapons of any kind while on duty.

Registration Duties
  • Greet and assist patients arriving during night hours when registration staff are unavailable.
  • Accurately register patients in the hospital's electronic medical record (EMR) system, if trained and authorized.
  • Notify nursing or clinical staff of new admissions or patient arrivals.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and hospital policies.
  • Assist registration and hospital staff during high-volume or overflow periods.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adhere to and promote all established HCHCA policies and procedures.
  • Follow all HIPAA and confidentiality regulations.
  • Perform any duties assigned by Security, Registration, Nursing, or Hospital Administration leadership.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and hospital safety drills as required.
  • Complete all required security reports, checklists, logs, and related documentation.
  • Escort staff members to their vehicles upon request.
  • Report safety hazards, suspicious activities, maintenance concerns, or security vulnerabilities immediately.
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance at all times.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills typically acquired through a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to function effectively in stressful environments and emergency situations.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm during emergencies.
  • Previous experience in security, law enforcement, healthcare security, or public safety is preferred.
  • Must successfully complete all required hospital orientation, security training, and annual competency requirements.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to patrol hospital buildings, parking areas, and grounds throughout the shift.
  • Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 25 pounds independently.
  • Must be able to assist with lifting, escorting, transporting, or supporting patients with mobility limitations when necessary and within hospital policy.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, and reach as required to perform assigned duties.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies occurring anywhere on hospital property.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • May require handling of unclean or infectious materials.
  • Work under stressful and fast-paced hospital conditions.
  • May be exposed to disruptive, agitated, or combative individuals.
  • May work outdoors in varying weather conditions while patrolling hospital grounds.
