Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications

Medical Laboratory Scientist – Free Standing Emergency Department

This position resides in a Free Standing Emergency Department (FSED) that does not contain a Clinical Laboratory.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs waived and moderate-complexity laboratory testing to support the timely diagnosis and treatment of patients and is responsible for independently performing and managing on-site testing activities within the scope of approved waived and moderate-complexity testing. 

Responsibilities include collecting, processing, and analyzing patient specimens; accurately documenting and communicating test results; ensuring compliance with laboratory policies and regulatory requirements; and collaborating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting.

In addition to laboratory responsibilities, the MLS serves as a key operational support resource for the facility. Duties include answering and directing telephone calls, monitoring and controlling access through the facility entrance, maintaining awareness of safety and security concerns, greeting and assisting patients and visitors, supporting patient flow, completing clerical and administrative tasks, and providing exceptional customer service. The MLS must demonstrate strong communication skills, professionalism, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively prioritize and balance laboratory, patient-facing, and operational responsibilities while maintaining a positive patient experience.
