Home Based Wig Making information

What is home based wig making?

Home based wig making is the craft and business of creating wigs from home, either by hand-tying hair strands to a wig cap or by assembling pre-made components. Individuals working in this field may create custom wigs for clients, repair existing wigs, or produce wigs for sale online or to local salons. This job offers flexibility and creative expression, and often requires skills in hairstyling, sewing, and customer service. Many home based wig makers operate as self-employed entrepreneurs, managing their own schedules, inventory, and marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based wig maker?

To thrive as a Home Based Wig Maker, you need strong skills in hair styling, wig construction techniques, and attention to detail, often developed through hands-on experience or specialized courses. Familiarity with tools such as sewing machines, ventilating needles, and knowledge of different types of hair and caps is essential, and certifications in cosmetology can be advantageous. Creativity, customer service skills, and effective time management help you stand out by delivering personalized, high-quality products and building a loyal client base. These skills are crucial for producing professional, durable wigs and ensuring customer satisfaction in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced when starting a home based wig making business and how can they be overcome?

One of the main challenges in starting a home-based wig making business is building a consistent client base while maintaining high product quality. New wig makers often need to invest time in marketing, portfolio development, and networking to attract customers. Managing inventory and sourcing quality materials can also be tricky, especially when working from home. Joining online communities, attending trade shows, and offering exceptional customer service are effective ways to overcome these challenges and grow your reputation in the industry.

What is the difference between Home Based Wig Making vs Wig Styling?

Work EnvironmentHome workshop or dedicated space, flexible hoursSalons, salons, or client locations, scheduled appointments
Industry UsageManufacturing, custom wig creation, costume designPersonal styling, hairpiece customization, fashion and entertainment

Home Based Wig Making focuses on creating wigs from raw materials in a home setting, emphasizing craftsmanship and manufacturing. Wig Styling involves customizing and styling wigs for clients or productions, often requiring cosmetology skills. While both roles may overlap in the wig industry, they differ in skills, environment, and purpose.

Do I need a license to make wigs as a home based wig making professional?

Home-based wig making professionals generally do not need a specific license to create wigs for personal use or small-scale sales, but licensing requirements can vary by location and business scope. If producing wigs commercially or selling to the public, you may need a business license or permit, and compliance with health and safety regulations may apply. It is advisable to check local regulations to ensure proper licensing and registration.

How can I start a career in home based wig making?

To start a career in home-based wig making, develop skills in hair styling, sewing, and wig construction through online courses or apprenticeships. Building a portfolio and understanding hair types and materials are essential, along with setting up a dedicated workspace and marketing your services locally or online.

Job description

You'll join a compassionate, fast-growing home health and home care team that supports patients one-on-one in their homes and communities. Expect to be hands-on -- providing personal care, supporting daily living needs, and making a real difference in someone's day, every shift. This is a role for someone dependable, patient, and service-driven who wants meaningful work and flexible opportunities. Licensed HHAs/CNAs are encouraged to apply -- and we also welcome motivated candidates willing to become certified.
Why this role matters
This is a high-impact, patient-facing caregiving role. You'll be a trusted presence in the home -- helping clients stay safe, comfortable, and independent. Your work directly supports quality of life for patients and peace of mind for their families. If you're energized by helping others, value one-on-one care, and want work that truly matters, this is a strong opportunity.
Key responsibilities
  • Provide personal care support including bathing, grooming, dressing, oral hygiene, and toileting
  • Assist with mobility, transfers, ambulation, and range-of-motion exercises per care plan
  • Prepare meals and assist with feeding as needed
  • Support medication self-administration through reminders (no independent med administration)
  • Monitor and report patient condition and changes to the supervising nurse
  • Take and record basic vital signs when trained and assigned
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly client environment
  • Assist with linens and light client laundry as appropriate
  • Use safety equipment properly (rails, supports, stools, etc.)
  • Document care provided according to company and regulatory standards
  • Travel reliably to patient homes and assigned visits across your service area
  • Complete required in-service training, including annual dementia education

What success looks like
  • Patients feel safe, respected, and well cared for
  • On-time arrival and dependable attendance for assigned visits
  • Accurate, timely care documentation
  • Positive feedback from patients and families
  • Completion of required certifications and training on schedule
  • Strong communication with supervising nurse and care team

Must-have requirements
  • Age 18 or older
  • Active HHA or CNA certification or willingness to obtain certification
  • Willingness to complete competency and skills assessments
  • Ability to follow written care instructions and document services
  • Compassion, patience, and professionalism with vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work independently in home settings
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel to client homes
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Willingness to complete TB testing, background screening, and onboarding requirements

Nice-to-have
  • 6+ months of caregiving or direct patient care experience
  • Home health or home care experience
  • CPR and Adult First Aid certification
  • Experience supporting seniors or medically complex clients
  • Experience working with dementia or memory care patients

Work environment & schedule
  • One-on-one care in patient homes and occasional facility settings
  • Flexible scheduling options may be available (full-time, part-time, PRN depending on market)
  • Assignments may include homes with pets or smokers
  • Travel within your preferred coverage area

Ideal candidate profile
You may be a great fit if you:
  • Are licensed --or motivated to become licensed
  • Enjoy helping others and building trust with clients
  • Are calm, respectful, and safety-focused
  • Can handle sensitive or challenging situations professionally
  • Are dependable and punctual
  • Communicate clearly with patients, families, and nurses
  • Want meaningful, people-centered work

If you're ready to make a daily difference in someone's life -- we'd love to meet you.
