Job description

Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Job Description

This role leads the technical execution of major environmental projects focused on asbestos and hazardous building materials abatement from concept through completion. You will plan, schedule, and coordinate complex project phases, develop abatement plans and technical specifications, and ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. You will guide and mentor junior to mid-level scientists, oversee the preparation of large environmental data sets and technical reports, and contribute to proposals and business development efforts. This position offers the opportunity to serve as a technical leader on impactful projects that support regulatory compliance, sustainability, and responsible development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical execution of major environmental projects focused on asbestos and hazardous building materials abatement from initial concept through completion.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed project phases, ensuring work progresses on time and in alignment with project objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare asbestos and hazardous building material abatement plans using AutoCAD, including detailed drawings and related technical specifications.
  • Develop abatement designs and specifications in compliance with OSHA, EPA, AHERA, NESHAP, TSCA, ICR 56, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manage projects involving state agency term contracts, demolition inspections, design, construction oversight, and environmental monitoring.
  • Guide, mentor, and support junior to mid-level scientists, fostering technical growth, adherence to client standards, and consistent quality control.
  • Oversee the preparation and management of large and complex environmental data sets, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
  • Lead the preparation of technical reports, design documents, and other deliverables for environmental projects.
  • Develop assessment reports and other reporting elements for clients, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver external presentations for clients, the public, and regulatory agencies, clearly communicating technical findings and recommendations.
  • Assist with proposal development, including preparing scopes of work, cost estimates, and supporting business development initiatives.
  • Ensure environmental compliance and monitoring activities are properly executed and documented in accordance with applicable regulations and project requirements.
  • Review and interpret architectural renovation and demolition drawings to inform abatement planning and design, with attention to building systems such as HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and building materials.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver practical, science-based environmental solutions that support responsible development and community well-being.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or a related field (a degreed person is preferred; significant relevant experience is also valued).
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of related experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, or a closely related environmental field.
  • Demonstrated experience with asbestos and hazardous building materials abatement projects, including environmental monitoring and compliance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel for data analysis, documentation, and report preparation.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural renovation and demolition drawings, with working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, insulation, and building materials.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and compliance requirements, including EPA regulations and related environmental compliance frameworks.
  • NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Building Inspector certification (required).
  • NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Project Designer certification (required).
  • Valid driver's license (required).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in the field under various weather conditions and physically navigate diverse environments.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD for preparing abatement plans and environmental design documents.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, AHERA, NESHAP, TSCA, and ICR 56 regulatory frameworks as they relate to asbestos and hazardous building materials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working on environmental projects involving hazardous materials, soil sampling, and environmental monitoring.
  • Background in environmental science, environmental engineering, or related disciplines with exposure to environmental fieldwork and environmental compliance.
  • NYSDOL Certified Asbestos Project Monitor certification (preferred).
  • USEPA Lead Inspector and Risk Assessor certification (preferred).
  • NYSDOL Article 32 Mold Assessor certification (preferred).
  • HAZWOPER / OSHA 40-hour training or equivalent health and safety training related to hazardous materials (preferred).
  • Experience with environmental data management and preparation of complex technical reports and design documents.
  • Ability to mentor and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, supporting a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
  • Experience participating in proposal development, including cost estimation and business development support.
  • Comfort presenting technical information to clients, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders.

Work Environment

You will work in an office environment where you oversee a team of approximately five to six scientists, collaborating closely on complex environmental projects. The role combines office-based responsibilities—such as data analysis, report preparation, AutoCAD design work, and regulatory documentation—with fieldwork under varying weather conditions and in diverse building and site environments. You will use standard office productivity tools such as Microsoft Word and Excel, along with AutoCAD and other technical software. The work culture emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and technical leadership, offering a flexible environment where your expertise directly influences project outcomes, regulatory compliance, and community well-being. Fieldwork may involve visits to construction, demolition, and abatement sites, where appropriate safety practices and protective equipment are used in accordance with regulatory and project requirements.

This is a Permanent position based out of Albany, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
