This position is based out of Norfolk or Houston TX (Spring) and requires up to 75%+ travel to US and International Job Sites and home based site work the rest.

ABOUT THE JOB:

Job Title: Quality Control Inspector (Coatings Inspector - Field Service Shipboard)
Location: Chesapeake VA Shop with travel to job sites (75%+ Travel to US and International Job Sites)
Reports To: Quality & Safety Manager


Job Overview:
The Quality Control Inspector is a detail-oriented NACE, AMPP or NBPI Certified Coating Inspector to examine and evaluate coatings for equipment and structures. Your responsibilities will include inspecting surfaces for contaminants, evaluating surface preparation according to specifications, and documenting inspection results. Our ideal candidates should have a solid understanding of coating materials and application techniques, as well as proven experience in coatings inspection and knowledge of safety regulations. Ultimately, the role of the NACE Certified Coating Inspector is to ensure all coatings and linings adhere to company standards and industry regulations, ensuring the longevity and durability of equipment and structures. The technician will be expected to travel 50–75% of the time, including domestic and international assignments, and must be able to work effectively aboard naval and commercial vessels under varying conditions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform dimensional inspections using a variety of precision measuring instruments gauges (data logger, surface roughness gauge, profile gauge, DFT Gauge, Conductivity meter, and dew point meter.
  • Interpret and apply military specifications, ISO 9001, AS9100D, and other relevant quality standards.
  • Support and maintain calibration programs in accordance with ISO/ANSI/NCSL Z540 and other applicable standards.
  • Document inspection results and maintain accurate records in quality databases and reports. Communicate inspection results and recommendations to clients and team members.
  • Participate in root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures when nonconformances are detected.
  • Inspect surface preparation and coating application on various structures and equipment.
  • Oversee compliance with MIL-STD coating and painting requirements for shipboard applications. Stay updated with latest industry practices, standards, and product developments.
  • Ensure all work complies with OSHA, shipyard safety rules, and company safety policies during field assignments.
  • Work collaboratively with production teams, project managers, and field service crews to ensure product quality and process control.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, technical specifications, and work instructions.
  • Provide training or coaching team members on inspection techniques, safety protocols, and quality procedures.
  • Act as an on-site quality and safety representative during field work, including aboard ships in foreign ports.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining quality documentation for audits and customer reviews. Assist in developing inspection procedures and standards.
  • Implement safety controls and hazard mitigation strategies while on job sites, including shipboard and overseas locations.

Pay Range: $30.00 - $35.00 Per Hour. Starting pay is determined based on relevant experience, education, technical qualifications, certifications, skills, and other job-related factors. Placement within the range reflects the candidate's overall qualifications, with the top of the range generally reserved for individuals whose experience and credentials substantially exceed the position's minimum requirements.

  • Certification from NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers).
  • Proven work experience as a Coating Inspector or similar role.

  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and drawings.
  • Strong communication and reporting skills.
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in different weather conditions.

  • Willingness and ability to travel 50–75% of the time, including overseas assignments.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and hazard identification.
  • Ability to work independently in shop and field environments. Ability to also work collaboratively in diverse environments and across multiple teams.

  • Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to take on flexible roles in a small-company environment, including handling responsibilities that span multiple functions.
  • Ability to gain and maintain access to government-controlled facilities, obtain a DBIDS credential, secure necessary security clearances, and maintain a valid U.S. Driver’s License and U.S. Passport.
  • Ability to pass required pre-employment screenings, including a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to present proof of "U.S. Person" status as defined by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR): a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience in shipboard paint/coating inspection (including non-skid, thermal spray, and MIL-PRF paint systems).
  • NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) certifications (e.g., VT, PT, MT) a plus.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standard items and government quality requirements.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and quality management software.
  • Prior experience in a traveling field service or ship repair role.
  • OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 Certification
  • Strong understanding of safety requirements.
  • Able to do basic calibration on various measurement tools.
  • NAVSEA Basic Paint Inspector (NBPI Certification) is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate’s or Technical degree in Quality, Manufacturing, or a related field is preferred. Prior shipyard experience is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a manufacturing, machining, or shipyard/ship repair environment required; shipyard experience strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and stand for long periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Physical Capabilities for Shipyard Operations: The role demands the ability to navigate diverse and challenging environments on naval vessels during the various project phases. This includes:
    • Climbing ladders and navigating stairs, reaching overhead, kneeling, crouching, and walking on uneven or slippery surfaces. Exposure to noise, vibration, and variable weather environments.
    • May sometimes require accessing work areas at heights, in confined spaces and maneuvering through tight, restricted areas to assess progress and ensure safety standards.

Travel and Other Requirements:

  • Ability to Travel (75%+) is Required: Frequent travel is required, including international travel, to supervise operations at various remote work sites.
