What is an HL7 Integration Architect?

HL7 Integration Architects are IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing healthcare data exchange systems using HL7 standards. They ensure that different healthcare applications and systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs) and laboratory systems, can communicate seamlessly and securely. Their role involves analyzing integration requirements, creating technical solutions, and troubleshooting interface issues to support interoperability within healthcare environments.

What are some common challenges faced by an HL7 Integration Architect during healthcare system implementations?

HL7 Integration Architects often encounter challenges such as managing complex data mapping between disparate healthcare systems, ensuring compliance with strict security and privacy regulations, and resolving issues related to data quality and interoperability. Effective communication with both technical teams and clinical stakeholders is crucial to clarify requirements and troubleshoot integration issues. Additionally, architects must stay updated on evolving HL7 standards and healthcare IT trends to design scalable, future-proof solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HL7 Integration Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HL7 Integration Architect, you need deep expertise in healthcare data standards like HL7, experience with system integration, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with integration engines (such as Mirth Connect or Rhapsody), interface development tools, and relevant certifications like HL7 or interoperability credentials are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and translate complex requirements into effective solutions. These skills ensure seamless interoperability between healthcare systems, supporting data accuracy and improved patient outcomes.

NOTE: General EDI experience alone is not sufficient. Candidates should demonstrate direct experience applying EDI/X12 technologies within healthcare claims, financial processing, Federal Government, or similarly regulated enterprise environments.
Position Overview
Fathom Management is seeking an experienced Enterprise Architect with recent Hands-On Architecture to support a Department of Veterans Affairs project focused on enterprise architecture, financial systems, healthcare claims processing, enterprise integration, cloud modernization, and legacy system transformation.
The successful candidate will bring approximately 15 years of overall IT/technology experience, including 3-5 years of hands-on Enterprise Architecture experience, with current technical skills in developing cloud architecture diagrams, legacy architecture diagrams, infrastructure specifications, integration models, and detailed enterprise architecture deliverables.
This is not a purely governance, advisory, or executive-level architecture position. The successful candidate must remain technically hands-on and capable of personally developing architecture artifacts, evaluating technical alternatives, documenting infrastructure and integration designs, and working directly with engineers and technical teams.
Candidates should have demonstrated experience in financial processing and healthcare claims environments, preferably within Federal Government environments, and should understand the architecture and integration requirements associated with X12, HL7, IBM Sterling B2B Integrator, iFAMS, and enterprise financial/healthcare systems.
Current Technical Architecture Experience
Candidates must demonstrate recent hands-on architecture development, including at least some of the following:
  • AWS architecture
  • Azure architecture
  • Hybrid cloud architecture
  • Legacy application architecture
  • Legacy-to-cloud modernization
  • Infrastructure architecture
  • Network architecture
  • Application architecture
  • Data architecture
  • API/integration architecture
  • Security architecture
  • Logical architecture diagrams
  • Physical architecture diagrams
  • Infrastructure specifications
  • Architecture decision records
  • Technical alternatives analysis
  • Architecture standards/design patterns

Architecture experience should reflect work performed within the candidate's recent career, not solely historical experience from earlier positions.
