What is health law?

Health law is a specialized area of legal practice that focuses on the regulations, policies, and laws governing the healthcare industry. This field covers issues such as patient rights, healthcare provider responsibilities, medical malpractice, bioethics, and the regulation of healthcare organizations. Health law professionals may work with hospitals, insurance companies, government agencies, or private practices to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and protect the rights of patients and providers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Law Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Law Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and a deep understanding of healthcare regulations, compliance, and medical ethics. Familiarity with legal research tools (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), HIPAA compliance systems, and healthcare contract management platforms is typical. Exceptional analytical thinking, negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly are standout soft skills. These skills are critical to ensuring clients navigate the highly regulated healthcare environment while minimizing legal risks.

How do health law professionals typically collaborate with healthcare providers and administrators?

Health law professionals frequently work in close partnership with healthcare providers and administrators to ensure compliance with regulations, manage risk, and address legal issues related to patient care, privacy, and billing. They may advise on policy development, resolve disputes, and help navigate complex laws such as HIPAA or the Affordable Care Act. Regular communication and teamwork are essential, as legal counsel must understand operational challenges and provide practical, actionable guidance tailored to the healthcare environment.

Department
IU Bloomington Maurer School of Law
Location
Bloomington
Position Summary
Indiana University Maurer School of Law (Bloomington) invites applications for a full-time clinical faculty position with the school's Intellectual Property Law Clinic, a part of the Center for Intellectual Property Research (CIPR). CIPR oversees the law school's intellectual property curriculum and programming, its co-curricular activities, its scholarly research in intellectual property and related areas, and its outreach to the practicing bar. The law school's curriculum includes numerous upper-level courses in intellectual property law and adjacent areas such as information policy, health law, AI and the law, and other aspects of law and technology.
The Intellectual Property Law Clinic provides students with hands-on experience delivering patent and trademark legal services to clients, with a particular focus on innovators, entrepreneurs, and emerging ventures. Under faculty supervision, students engage in all aspects of intellectual property practice, with a particular emphasis on client counseling, the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, and other aspects of intellectual property law of importance to the Clinic's pro bono clients. The Clinic operates under the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Law School Clinic Certification Program, allowing students to practice before the USPTO while gaining practical, skills-based training in intellectual property law. The Clinic is one of the nation's busiest clinics of its kind, with a large patent and trademark docket and a substantial student enrollment each semester. Working in the clinic is one of the capstone experiences for intellectual property law students at the law school.
The clinical faculty member will be responsible for teaching the classroom component of the Intellectual Property Law Clinic and for managing the Clinic's client service operations. The faculty appointment will be at the rank of clinical associate professor (with the opportunity for a later promotion to full rank) or at the full rank of clinical professor, depending upon the candidate's background and prior teaching experience.
This position is expected to commence on July 1, 2026, but an earlier start date is negotiable. Salary range, depending on qualifications and experience, begins at $105,000 for a 12-month appointment, with generous employer-supported benefits. Clinical faculty at Maurer are on a series of five-year presumptively renewable contracts upon promotion to clinical professor. We welcome lateral applicants as well as less experienced applicants.
Basic Qualifications
Applicants must have a J.D. degree and must be admitted to practice in Indiana or licensed in another jurisdiction and eligible to be admitted on motion to practice in Indiana. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in delivering patent and trademark legal services to clients. At least one year of clinical teaching experience is preferred but not required.
