Job description

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (โ€œLegal Aidโ€) seeks a Paralegal to join its Veterans Law Project located in its downtown Atlanta office. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. Founded in 2022, the Veterans Law Project has had an immediate and profound impact on the civil legal needs of veterans in the metro-Atlanta area. The Project advocates on behalf of veterans to obtain cash benefits, health and housing benefits, restrict criminal and consumer records, upgrade military discharges, and prevent homelessness - with an emphasis on eviction prevention. The Veterans Law Project staff support veterans through holistic legal services, as well as collaborations for supportive services with local law schools and courts, the VA hospital, and veteran services organizations. The unit currently consists of a managing attorney, two staff attorneys, and two paralegals.
Responsibilities:
  • Screening of clients and questionnaire completion
  • Ensure grant compliance, organize data and documentation required for grants, attend scheduled site visits and assist in the preparation of periodic reports
  • Data management, including entering information into Legal Aidโ€™s database and retrieving relevant data
  • File management, including scanning documents into the client database, digital organization, filing, drafting letters, assisting with document preparation, and archiving closed cases
  • Client management, including providing clients with information and advice under the strict supervision of an attorney
  • Unit management including maintaining the monthly intake and outreach schedule, training of new staff, volunteers and interns on the case management system, maintaining volunteer contact information and case assignments, tracking and closing cases, providing litigation and non-litigation support to the attorney
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, but not required
  • One to two years of experience in social services, including outreach with a legal nonprofit or comparable setting
  • Previous experience working with homeless and veteran populations is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and previous work with low-income people, with an appreciation for diversity, is strongly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, listening, and organizational skills
  • Must possess creative problem solving skills with meticulous attention to detail and data entry accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team model
  • Prior experience with law office management software strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in languages other than English, specifically Spanish, is highly valued

Salary and Benefits:
  • This position offers a salary of $50,000, but may vary (up or down) depending on work experience. Salaries are reviewed annually and may be adjusted based on available funding
  • Generous fringe benefits, including 16 paid holidays in 2026, 6 weeks of paid time off (accruing at 2.5 days per month), and 6 weeks of parental leave (12 weeks after one year)
  • Individual health insurance, including optional dental and vision coverage, with partial payment for dependent health insurance
  • Life, long-term, and short-term disability insurance
  • Salary reduction option for a flexible spending account
  • Educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a set off of other loan reimbursement amounts)

  • This position may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness through the U.S. Department of Education
  • A hybrid work schedule that allows staff to work 2 days remotely, subject to management approval and a probationary employment period
