What are some typical challenges faced by a head of tax when managing a multinational company's tax strategy?

As a Head of Tax in a multinational company, you’ll often encounter challenges such as staying compliant with rapidly changing global tax regulations and navigating complex cross-border tax structures. Coordinating with various departments and external advisors to ensure accurate reporting and risk management is a key part of the role. Additionally, you’ll need to balance effective tax planning with the company’s broader business goals, all while leading and developing a diverse team. These challenges make the role dynamic and require strong leadership and technical expertise.

What is a head tax?

A head tax is a fixed fee levied on each individual within a jurisdiction, regardless of income or resources. Historically, this type of tax has been used by governments as a straightforward method of raising revenue, often for specific purposes such as funding public infrastructure or services. The term 'head tax' is most commonly associated with certain historical examples, such as the Chinese Head Tax in Canada, which targeted specific immigrant groups. Today, head taxes are less common and are often considered regressive because they do not take a person's ability to pay into account.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head of tax, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Head of Tax, you need deep expertise in tax law, compliance, and planning, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and relevant certifications (such as CPA or CTA). Familiarity with tax software, ERP systems, and data analytics tools is essential for managing complex tax environments. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate tax compliance, optimized tax strategies, and strong cross-functional collaboration within the organization.

You’ll work across a range of clients, from private equity-backed portfolio companies to large corporates navigating regulatory complexity, delivering practical solutions with immediate impact.

In an environment marked by rapid tax regulatory changes at the federal, state, international and local levels, it is crucial to have real-time insights. Our team stays abreast of these changes and their implications for income and indirect taxes, allowing companies to focus on their day-to-day operations. By taking a proactive and practical approach, we deliver pragmatic solutions to address tax challenges and enhance internal tax functions.

Our Tax Advisory services encompass a range of areas, including Accounting for Income Taxes, Transaction Tax, Sales and Use Tax, Distressed and Bankruptcy Tax, and General Tax Consulting including Transfer Pricing and Tax Technology solutions. Whether a client needs an interim Head of Tax, assistance standing up a tax department, or leadership through a major transaction, Riveron's ITM professionals deliver practical solutions with immediate impact. What makes this role distinctive: no two engagements are alike. You’ll rotate across industries and client situations—bringing real-time judgment where it matters most, with the backing of a national consulting platform.

  • CPA preferred

  • 13+ years of progressive corporate tax, public accounting, or tax consulting experience

  • Experience serving as a Tax Director, Senior Manager, or tax function leader

  • Strong technical knowledge of:

    • ASC 740 (income tax accounting)

    • Federal, state, and local income tax compliance

    • M&A tax implications

    • Tax controls and governance

  • Experience supporting private equity-backed companies, carve-outs, or complex corporate transactions preferred

  • Comfortable leading client-facing engagements and serving as a trusted advisor to CFOs, Controllers, and executive leadership

  • Exposure to indirect tax (Sales & Use, VAT or tax technology platforms)

  • Exceptional project management, communication, and leadership skills

  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, changing environments

  • Willingness to travel based on client needs

What You’ll Do:

  • Use tax technical knowledge to advise clients on complex tax implications, liabilities, and strategies

  • Remain up to date on tax issues, legislative changes, and best practices

  • Provide guidance and issue resolution support to teams across multiple concurrent client engagements

  • Provide Interim Tax Leadership

    • Serve as a Tax Leader for clients experiencing organizational change or leadership transitions

    • Lead day-to-day tax operations while ensuring business continuity during critical periods

    • Act as the primary tax advisor to executive leadership, finance teams, external auditors, and outside tax service providers

  • Drive Tax Operations & Compliance

    • Oversee federal, state, and local income tax compliance workflows and filing calendars

    • Manage relationships with external preparers and review tax provisions under ASC 740

    • Identify and remediate tax risks; strengthen internal controls and governance frameworks

  • Lead Tax Transformation Initiatives

    • Assess and redesign tax operating models, processes, and organizational structures

    • Evaluate and implement tax technology solutions to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reporting

    • Partner with finance and IT teams to integrate tax requirements into broader ERP and data initiatives

  • Support Tax-Driven Transactions

    • Advise on tax implications of M&A, carve-outs, restructurings, and other strategic transactions

    • Lead tax due diligence and coordinate with deal teams, legal counsel, and outside advisors

    • Manage post-close integration of tax functions, reporting, and compliance obligations
