Job description

Director of Retail Banking

A well-established, community-focused financial institution is creating a new Director of Retail Banking position to bring greater leadership, consistency, and direction to its retail banking organization.

This role comes at an important time for the bank. Customer behavior and branch traffic continue to change, and the bank is placing greater emphasis on service, relationship-building, employee development, and making the most of its branch network. The Director will help lead that transition while providing day-to-day leadership and support branch managers need to succeed.

This is not a position where someone is simply stepping into an established playbook. The bank has recognized the need for stronger oversight across its retail organization and is looking for someone who can help define what that looks like. The right person will have the opportunity to build relationships with branch leaders, identify opportunities to improve how the network operates, and turn good ideas into practical changes.

The Director will work closely with senior leadership and branch managers, providing a central point of leadership and support across the retail organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and oversight to branch managers and retail banking staff.
  • Establish greater consistency in branch operations, service standards, and customer experience.
  • Monitor branch performance and identify opportunities for process and operational improvements.
  • Support the continued development of a service-focused retail banking culture.
  • Lead training, coaching, and professional development efforts across the branch network.
  • Oversee and support consumer lending activities within the retail organization.
  • Help develop and implement retail banking initiatives and strategies across the branch network.
  • Identify opportunities to improve business development, customer outreach, and deposit growth.
  • Serve as a liaison between branch leadership and senior management.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Significant experience in retail banking, branch banking, or a related financial services leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading, mentoring, and developing branch managers and frontline banking teams.
  • Strong understanding of branch operations, consumer lending, deposits, and customer service.
  • A forward-thinking leader who can identify opportunities for improvement and help put those ideas into action.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Someone who is comfortable balancing day-to-day execution with a broader view of where retail banking is headed.
  • Business development experience is a plus, but this is not primarily a sales-focused role.

Why Consider It?

  • Build something of your own: This is a newly created position, giving you the opportunity to help define the role, establish processes, and shape the future of the bank's retail organization.
  • Meaningful leadership scope: Lead and mentor branch managers and retail banking professionals across a multi-location network.
  • Visibility: Work directly with senior leadership while helping influence the bank's retail strategy and execution.
  • Opportunity for growth: This role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact today while creating additional opportunities for leadership down the road.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits: The bank offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package..
