JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director of Parks & Recreation or designee, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising lifeguards and overseeing the safe operation of designated swimming areas at City beaches and pools. The Head Lifeguard monitors waterfront activities, ensures compliance with safety policies and procedures, coordinates lifeguard coverage, and responds to emergency situations including water rescues and first aid.
This position also provides leadership and guidance to lifeguard staff, assists with training, and helps maintain a safe and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of lifeguards at assigned beach or pool locations.
  • Monitor waterfront operations to ensure compliance with established safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Schedule lifeguard staff and ensure appropriate coverage of swimming areas at all times.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including performing water rescues and administering first aid, CPR, or AED as needed.
  • Monitor swimmers and waterfront conditions to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Enforce beach and pool rules and regulations in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Assist with the training and evaluation of lifeguards and ensure staff participate in required in-service training and safety drills.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for lifeguards during assigned shifts and communicate operational issues to supervisors.
  • Ensure lifeguards maintain appropriate appearance and follow City of Stamford uniform and safety standards.
  • Maintain records of incidents, injuries, and daily activity logs.
  • Inspect lifeguard equipment and facilities to ensure they are safe and operational.
  • Provide assistance and information to residents and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
  • Knowledge of lifeguarding principles, water rescue techniques, and aquatic safety procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
  • Prior lifeguarding experience required; supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Strong swimming ability and physical stamina.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays during the summer season.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from assigned work locations.

If the position is a seasonal/temporary position, it is not eligible for union benefits.
