What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head end engineer?

To thrive as a Head End Engineer, you need a solid background in broadcast engineering, signal processing, and telecommunications, often supported by a degree in electronics or communications engineering. Familiarity with headend equipment, digital video broadcasting (DVB), IP networking, and relevant certifications such as SCTE or CCNA are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help address technical issues efficiently and coordinate with multiple departments. These competencies ensure the reliable delivery and maintenance of broadcast and cable services, which are critical for customer satisfaction and operational success.

What is a head end engineer?

Head End Engineers are technical professionals responsible for managing and maintaining the headend systems in cable television, satellite, or broadband networks. The headend is the central point where signals are received, processed, and distributed to subscribers. These engineers ensure the quality and reliability of broadcast or data services by overseeing equipment installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and upgrades. Their role is critical in delivering uninterrupted content and high-quality service to customers.

What is the difference between Head End Engineer vs Cable Technician?

AspectHead End EngineerCable Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in satellite or broadcast systemsHigh school diploma, technical certifications in cable installation
Work EnvironmentHead end facilities, broadcast centers, technical labsCustomer sites, residential and commercial locations
Industry UsageTelevision, satellite, and broadcast industriesCable TV service providers, telecommunications

The Head End Engineer primarily focuses on the design, maintenance, and operation of broadcast and satellite equipment at the head end facilities. In contrast, the Cable Technician handles installation, troubleshooting, and repair of cable services at customer locations. While both roles require technical knowledge of cable and broadcast systems, the Head End Engineer works more on system management and technical infrastructure, whereas the Cable Technician interacts directly with customers for service delivery.

What are some typical challenges faced by head end engineers when integrating new broadcast technologies?

Head End Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new broadcast technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with existing systems, minimizing service interruptions, and adapting workflows to support upgraded hardware and software. Staying current with rapidly evolving industry standards and troubleshooting complex signal flow issues are also common. Collaboration with IT, network, and content teams is essential to achieve smooth transitions and maintain high-quality service delivery.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Physical Security Systems Engineer to lead head-end programming, commissioning, and advanced troubleshooting of enterprise Access Control and VMS platforms. This is a hands-on technical role for an experienced physical security professional who has programmed and commissioned real-world systems in integration or low-voltage contracting environments.

This role is responsible for head-end configuration, multi-platform system integration, technical escalation support, and continuous standards improvement. The ideal candidate can rapidly learn and operate across multiple access control and VMS platforms while ensuring system stability, cybersecurity alignment, and technical execution excellence.

Compensation: $89,440-$135,000

Candidates from pure IT, desktop support, general network engineering, or corporate security operations backgrounds without substantial hands-on physical security platform commissioning experience are unlikely to be a fit.

Technical Requirements

  • 5+ years of direct, hands-on experience independently programming, configuring, and commissioning enterprise Access Control and VMS platforms in a security systems integration, low voltage contracting, or similar field deployment environment.
  • Proven experience commissioning head-end systems
  • Strong understanding of:
    • TCP/IP networking fundamentals
    • VLANs and firewall basics
    • Server-client architectures
    • Windows Server environments
    • SQL database fundamentals
  • Experience with system migrations and upgrades
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specs
  • Ability to pass federal background check
  • Valid Driver’s License

Core Responsibilities:

Head-End Programming & Commissioning

  • Program, configure, and commission enterprise Access Control and VMS platforms
  • Integrate multi-site systems and complex database builds
  • Configure user roles, partitions, policies, schedules, alarms, and reporting
  • Validate firmware, patching, and cyber hardening alignment
  • Perform QA/QC of panel builds and head-end deployments

Advanced Troubleshooting

  • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 escalation support to field technicians
  • Diagnose database, firmware, controller, and integration-level issues
  • Work directly with manufacturer support to resolve escalated cases
  • Open and manage manufacturer tickets when required
  • Perform forensic troubleshooting of intermittent system failures

Engineering & Standards Contribution

  • Contribute to system standards development
  • Provide structured feedback to estimating and engineering teams
  • Assist in final BOM validation and gap analysis
  • Support RFI/RFP technical discovery
  • Ensure builds align with company cyber and deployment standards

Field & Client Interface

  • Conduct site surveys for electronic security and low voltage systems
  • Attend project meetings when technical leadership is required
  • Train customers on commissioned systems
  • Mentor technicians and junior engineers

Preferred Certifications/Experience

  • Gallagher, LenelS2, Identiv, CCURE 9000, HID, Idemia, Hirsch
  • Milestone, Avigilon, Verkada, Geutebruck, Axis, Hanwha
  • Bosch, DMP
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals training
  • CSEIP or equivalent preferred

Performance Expectations

Success in this role is measured by:

  • Reduction in repeat service calls
  • Faster system commissioning timelines
  • Improved project margin through technical accuracy
  • Positive post-project customer feedback
  • Continuous technical feedback to engineering and estimating
  • Demonstrated ability to master new systems rapidly

Behavioral Profile

We are looking for someone who:

  • Understands system architecture and interdependencies across platforms
  • Understands the realities of project-based integration work, field installations, and the direct link between thorough commissioning and reduced repeat service calls.
  • Demonstrates strong technical self-sufficiency and initiative
  • Can troubleshoot under pressure
  • Communicates clearly with both technicians and executives
  • Values standards, documentation, and repeatability
  • Elevates the technical capability of the organization

Applicants selected may be subject to a background investigation and must obtain and maintain both a favorable personal security suitability determination and customer approval.
