What is a hardscape foreman?

Hardscape Foremen are skilled professionals responsible for overseeing and managing the installation of hardscape features in landscaping projects, such as patios, walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor kitchens. They lead teams of workers, ensuring that all tasks are completed according to design specifications, safety standards, and within set timelines. Hardscape Foremen coordinate materials, operate equipment, and often interact with clients to ensure satisfaction. Their role is essential in bringing outdoor construction projects to life with both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardscape foreman?

To thrive as a Hardscape Foreman, you need hands-on experience in landscape construction, knowledge of materials and installation techniques, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with equipment such as skid steers, laser levels, compactors, and project management or scheduling software is typically required. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help manage crews and ensure client satisfaction. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering projects efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards of quality.

Job description

Hardscape Foreman (Lead Builder) - High-End Outdoor Living

Pittsburgh (report to North Versailles shop) | Full-Time

$25-$40/hr + bonus opportunities (DOE) | 40-55 hrs/week

You're a foreman who cares about doing it right - clean layout, tight lines, solid base, walls that

last, and a crew that gets better because you're leading it.

With us, foremen are not micromanaged - they get trusted, supported, and held

accountable. We build high-end outdoor living spaces and we take pride in craftsmanship and

professionalism on every site.

What you'll run (real work, not busywork)

• Paver patios + walkways

• Segmental retaining walls

• Outdoor kitchens, fire features, stone + concrete work

Grading/excavation/drainage tied into hardscape installs

• Occasional carpentry tie-ins (as needed)

What your week looks like

• Lead a crew (typically 2-5 people depending on job size)

• Hands-on building + directing production

• Morning plan, material checks, and keeping the site moving

• Equipment operation (skid, mini, excavator as needed)

• Communicate with the PM/leadership on progress, needs, and issues

• Maintain a clean, safe site and a professional client experience

You'll be successful here if you:

• Build to a high standard without cutting corners

• Can teach and correct without being a jerk

• Keep a crew productive and organized

• Can solve problems on-site and communicate early

Requirements

• 3-4+ years hardscape install experience

• 1-2+ years leading a crew (or clearly ready for the step up)

• Valid PA driver's license

• Comfortable driving truck/trailer setups (we'll be clear what's required)

• Lift 50+ lbs, work outdoors, show up on time

Nice to have (not required): ICPI/NCMA, masonry strength, Class A CDL

Benefits

• Health / dental / vision

• Company-paid short & long-term disability

• Retirement plan with match

• 5-10 days PTO to start

• 6 paid holidays

• Modern equipment + a team that cares about quality
